|
|
During the install of my new longblock I discovered that I had a 30amp Gen. backing plate. Pulley alignment must have been way off since I purchased the bus. Two years and no belt issues. (?)
I have all the parts for the swap. I have two fans to choose for the install. Both are 35mm wide but one has ~3/4" holes drilled inside. Which one should I use?
Also I have a alt. fuel pump and the shorter ~3+" rod. When I put it in it sits flush or below the top of the fuel pump spacer. Almost like dist. shaft drive is missing. The old gen. long rod sits at the standard 13mm max.
Ideas.
Thanks
Dean

alternator push rod is supposed to sit flush to the pedestal, thats correct.
so what you didnt say was- i presume- that you ran a 38 amp genny with a 30 amp backing plate? is the genny really 38amp?
i would choose the fan without the holes. same width is not all there is to it. there is also vane spacing... |

Correct. I was running a 30 amp (flat bug) backing plate with a 38 amp generator without any problems. I only noticed the mis-alignment when I was swapping the parts over to the new engine.
Correct me if I am wrong but if the fuel pump rod sits flush to the spacer it will not activate the pump foot. ??
Thanks

only flush at its lowest point. turn the engine, you will see that it comes up for part of the combustion cycle- 2 turns of crank |

From my experience with long blocks the dist. drive is not installed as it doesn`t come with a distributer. If you have an alt. The backing plate and stand are different than the one for generators. |

The backing plates that came with my alternator conversion kit
were identical in all respects to my original stock 38 amp generator backing plates. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

Ned has a good point. With your new long block it might not have come with a distributor drive installed. And also the washers under the drive gear would affect the pushrod height. The combined thickness of the 2 washers is .050". _________________ 71 Superbug

Thanks for the help.
I did have the dist. drive installed with two washers but just didn't rotate the crank far enough. It now goes from flush to about 4-5mm above the pump spacer.
Now I'm set with the correct rod, fuel pump, backing plate and stand.
