I have a 55 beetle, and I have tried to make my own gas cap seal (cork) and it doesn't work. I have been unable to find a seal from any suppliers, does anyone know where I can find a new seal, or what to use to make my own?

| I just bought a 100mm gas cap seal from Wolfsburg West. It is made of rubber, not cork. I am not sure if anybody sells cork 100mm seals. |

Cut a rubber one out of an old car inner tube if you have one laying around.

I cut ny 100mm seal out of cork and it works just fine.

I just measured my cap & it is 113mm on the outside of the cap, and the tank measures 105mm outside diameter. Is this the one the 100mm seal fits? or do I just make one out of a tube?

^^^If it contacts both surfaces then it's not to thin and will work. If the cap rattles around then cut 2 gaskets, it will still seal.

i know how it seals what i'm saying is that i think one,two three might be too thin.
the gasket if fairly thick.
hence not sure if inner tube rubber will work.
i do think a thicker rubber or cork that people have used will work.
i bought a cork one off a guy in the uk years ago and it seemed to work fine

That could be the case too Russ, I haven't looked at mine yet so I dont really know the thickness. Maybe try a rubber and gasket company. I have one near by that carry a wide range of thicknesses that would get the job done. If you could get a measurement for me I could go check it out if you'd like.

i put a link up to a similar seal in the second post as well Bruce.
i would say the only downside to the rubber seal i am using now is it dries out and makes getting the the cap off really tuff.
i have tried vaseline but i think the gas fumes just eat it and the next time it is tuff again?
my cork one broke when i tried putting it on:)

The seals should be Buna (Nitrile) - natural rubber or neoprene gets damaged by hydrocarbons.
Viton works ok too, but is $$ and not as flexible as Buna. |

The CIP seal did not have in the description what the material was. I just got mine from CIP, and I can confirm theirs is rubber. Probably the same supplier as the one in Russ' link.
IMO, this is the type of material the seal needs to be made from:
It is a high density fiber type material.
Who knows a source for this type of seal for caps?
Edit:
I just had a look at the Blau site, and they sell a rubber seal. No luck there.
In looking at the cap, I don't know if a high density fiber type seal could be stretched to fit over the 2 ears.

Has anyone used the blue rubber type? Is it difficult to remove like the crappy black rubber seal KN and CIP1 sells?
Which one would you use?
FYI, both seals are 2.4-2.5mm thick, just in case you want to cut your own from a sheet of cork.

The gas cap is easier to open and close with the cork seal, but it crushes to a paper-thin wafer in no time and gas seeps past the gasket when this happens.
The blue rubber seal has been available as a service part since 1956. It takes a lot more effort to open and close the cap, but I've never had a seepage problem like with the cork gasket.
The trick to using the blue gasket is to lubricate the sealing surface of the filler neck with a couple of drops of gas from the nozzle after filling up and immediately put the cap back on.
1 vote for the blue gasket.

| The blue gasket is available, the same size as in pre-60s Porsches, now they use the blue gasket and then a second thinner gasket, sandwiched between the cap and blue gasket to allow the blue gasket movement, so it does not get stuck. |

sort of along the same lines, but not quite-
I have tried to used both the cork seal available here in the Samba, and a really nice original, that is a bit thicker than the cork one. With either one, the cap will not "lock in", that is, it will just keep spinning around the filler neck..Has anyone ever successfully taken one apart? Does that little corrugated spring-looking affair under the cap come out? Do the tangs that are supposed to lock the cap to the tank have anything to do with getting the cap apart? I have a dent or two I would like to make go away..
