If I want to take a section out of the rear window, where would you cut it?

although not 100% top chop related, i have some questions

i will have to repair a badly damaged bug which has the A pillars near the windshield gone. i should cut them and also replace the roof entirely at the corner of the door.

now... to weld the A pillars near the defroster vents in the dash, how should i approach this? is an outside weld enough? how far does the reinforcement that holds the hinges go upwards in the A pillar next to the windshield?

i think i must leave some space open to weld in the reinforcement first, then cover it off with the outside skin?

Thanks !

Ok, total newb here so go easy.
I have a 68 baja, runs but needs lots of cosmetic work ect.
I have a lead on a 72 roof that is a sun roof. Could this be used? If so would it be lame to put it on a baja?

It's only as lame as you make it out to be. Your gonnna get both extremes of answers here, from the guy who has radical customs telling u to go for it, to the purists who say it's stupid, and your ruining the car. If you like it then, go for it. It's your car, build it how you want it, not how a crowd of keyboard commando's want.

Tho personally I say go for it Laughing

I concur sir. I feel as though the author of this original post has abandoned us. I have many questions that need answering before I can proceed. Will a 72 with the sun roof work. I have also found a 73 hard with a flat Front windshield, will these work on a 68?

Theres no reason it wouldn't work. Tho if I were to guess it would prolly be easier to cut the sunroof portion out and graft it in later, as you have to cut the existing roof in several pieces and use the second or even third roofs to fill in the gaps. Once you get the roof chop done, and all welded up you can then cut the hole in the roof and graft the sunroof in. I hope your a good welder, and have a lot of free time. Cool

Question
Inside the front of the ragtop clip there are 3 supports; one in each corner and one in the center.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

What did you do with these? Cut them off the clip entirely and add your own later? I assume they are required or at least highly recommended. The center doesn't concern me too much, I just don't want to ruin the corner supports if they can be used again. From this photo it looks like you left the center support on the ragtop clip, just not the corners
I'm at this point with my ragtop donor; lines are traced and ready to be cut.

I just tacked the corners of this center piece. You could weld it better before you did the outer filler piece, but the factory welds are very weak probably a little over kill. They probably thought ''what if some one sat there?''.

Thanks for the great help. I am about to start my first project on a tiny budget. The bug is going to be a course for me. I wish I could have it convertible but it is very hard to have the papers approved here in Brazil.
So I want to have a lower roof and cut it in a cabriolet style. From above the driver up to the motor. Has anyone here gone this far? I ve never found picts like these.

Just in time: Thanks for the great tutorial. Thanks for sharing!!!!

Loved this thread ! ! ! . My son has a 64 that was chopped when we bought it . I wish whoever did it had seen this or a similar photo journal ,under the Bondo it was Fugly . We did a very similar thing done here ,we added a sunroof and a Oval rear clip . The issue we had with the clip was that now it was laid down further forward and there was a gap at the back center and tight at the end between the deck lid and the body . We ended up having to cut the body below the grills and extending it out to close the gap . Once done you still have to have your hand on the top of the deck lid when opening it up so it does not chip the paint .
On to the glass question . The person who said that you could sand blast the glass was right that works for the most most part ,but will send fractures into the needed part most times . It is a crude way to do it but it works and quickly at that . But remember that you can only do it to Laminated glass (windshields ) it WILL not work on Tempered glass (side ,door, rear glass ) . This why it is a good idea to law a factory window back in a cut section complete or you end having to use plastic (ugly) .
Having the glass made is a straight forward project really . Once the car is chopped ,make a template of the inside of the Pinchweld flange . This what we call the Daylight opening . So your pattern should fit tightly through the opening ,this is the exact size of your glass to be cut . Once you shorten the rubber the glass should just rope right in . Before you chop a VW or if you the glass out compare the glass to the opening size and they should have the same relationship before and after . I like to put Tempered back in the doors especially if going with one piece windows ,it takes a lot more beating than laminated .
I have made custom glass for a lot of cars ,these jobs are always Time And materials as they take a lot of both . One other side note only 64 and down cars have FLAT glass ,65 and the front glass is semi curved . While it can be cut from a stock window you usually lose 2 or 3 until you get one cut ,again I do this at owners expense .

Make a fiberglass template of the stock windshied and then trim as necessary while chopping the top to make sure the geometry isn't off. Especially for a curved fat girl windshield Wink

Long time reader.. first post however

Sorry for the thread revival but I believe it's time for me to do something I've always wanted to do.. Chop a bug. I've had alot of Beetles but never a chopped one.

I see that the OP hasn't been on in a few years but maybe someone else can answer my question about this method of chop..

I plan to chop using this as a template but I'm curious if it has any affect on the deck lid or fender alignment. I won't be doing a VolksRod but something a little more traditional but dirty and sweaty.. But that could change ! Still in the planning stages.

BTW, I'm in Indy looking for a few shells.. Gimmie a shout if you have any leads
