Hi,
as we now here talk about prototyps and nice other things -
This is the only known piece from a 1945 typ 100 beetle
I found the chassis about 1995 in Berlin

By the weld seams, it looks like a std Beetle chassis that was shortened, yes? _________________ John Henry

I've seen this model referred to as the Road Tractor. It was included in the official factory chart of models the factory was capable of producing after the war, though some of those models were never built at all. This one was intended for rural use as a substitute for a tractor. |

is that a trailer hitch in the rear? So it could pull some larger trailers? Now I see that the text reads "Zugmachine" that translates as "pulling vehicle" _________________

And so, why the different wheel,hub config's front & rear? Sure emphasizes the imbalanced appearance...but maybe a method 2 the madness?

The hubs/drums are standard Kubel parts - "star-casting" reinforcement in the rear and smooth in the front. |

The USAF uses similar cut down vehicles still today for towing aircraft ground equipment around on the flightline, you can get a heck of a tight turning radius with such a short wheelbase :

The purpose of shortening it would be to make it more manuverable for farm use. If you're pulling a plow through a field, you have to turn sharply to furrow the next row. Remember, this was right after the war. The factory was experimenting with an agragarian application which wasn't entirely practical, otherwise the car would have been put into production. And the difference in tires can probably be chalked up to whatever the experimental shop had lying around at the time. |

Volkswagen would have been under the same rules as Mercedes I'd imagine, the Allied Control Council had prohibited the manufacture of passenger cars for the time being. They were producing pickups, panel vans and ambulances.
Also doing repair work on allied military vehicles. _________________ -----

The Volkswagen factory (Wolfsburg Motor Works) drew up a chart in Sept. 1945 showing the types of vehicles the factory could produce. The chart was based on vehicles designed by Porsche before and during the war, and shows Beetles and Kubels, convertibles, sunroofs, van bodies, pickups and this Type 100 road tractor listed as a special model.
According to the chart, the only two models in production at the time were the Type 11 standard saloon and the Type 51 saloon with Type 87 chassis.
