PostPosted: Sat Mar 07, 2009 9:05 pm    Post subject: The General Repairs Bus Reply with quote

Nearly three years ago I was at the Sacramento Bug-O-Rama with some buddies... I went there looking for a bus, and had enough money to be dangerous. This dude comes strolling down the swap meet handing out flyers. He had a couple of busses for sale outside of Reno, (Yerington) which is on our way home... so, what the hell? One of the pics on his flyer was of this 58 panel... and OHHHH what a beautiful turd it was. Needless to say, I bought it, had to come back the next weekend with a trailer because there was no way it would make it a mile on the towbar. It's now in progress, and although I am not as fastidious about taking pictures as some, I thought you all might enjoy some of them.

The fabulous Hippie Headliner STAYS. I just re-finished it, don't have "After" Pics yet.

The dash was rough, but has been straightened in this pic. Not bad for a bus that was hit hard long ago.

The ripples tell the story. Hit hard, beat back out, Nose re-skinned long ago. Not going to be easy to make this dash look nice. But it can be done.

3" narrowed beam with 64 to 70 trailing arms and brakes. No problem with Raders that way.

Mashed headlight bucket is looking better.

Ok, now I have to come up with a rear bumper that can even come CLOSE to the awesomeness of the front one. I had a chunk of 4x4" square tube out back rusting away... It will look PERFECT after a LOT of torching, grinding, welding.

Had these pieces laser cut by an aquaintance of mine.

Heat & Beat, then weld and grind. This gives you an idea of where I'm going with this... I'll post pics of the finished product.

I have to agree. That front bumper is badass. That's a downtown traffic bumper if there ever was one.

That bumper reminds me of the old locomotives that had a "cow catcher" on the front.

It is the "anti-hurst" bumper. Cool.

Are you keeping the patch in the side?

You would already know this but the jack support needs to be welded to the floor, in a couple of spots.

If you really want to match the cool factor of the front... weld that shovel to that rear bumper and any other random shit you can come up with, in fact come over and I'll load you up with alcohol, crazy ideas, (inspiration)
and some scrap metal..
Just Kidding (except for the part about coming over) I am lusting after that work of art.

Time for some replies:

"I have to agree. That front bumper is badass. That's a downtown traffic bumper if there ever was one."

"damn! lookin' good."

"That bumper reminds me of the old locomotives that had a "cow catcher" on the front."

Thank you for your kind comments and support! Cheers!

"looks like the front bumper has an opening for an oval sign - I love that! How about an nice custom enameled plate !?"

I have thought long and hard about what will end up in this oval... not sure yet. An enameled sign would be cool... but it has to "fit" with the rest of the bus. I am undecided at this point.

"That "Chuck Wagon Bumper" is really nifty.

Remember that commercial as a kid the dog chasing that covered wagon... ok im weird.

keep the pics flowing !!!"

Not weird, I remember that commercial too... I wanna say "Gravy Train" brand pooch food? Seems like I would see that commercial during H.R. Puff'n'Stuff and The Banana Splits on Saturday mornings. You must be close to my age. (44) Also, it's funny that you came up with that... The guy I bought it from was named "Chuck." No kidding.

"I really enjoyed reading this, what a success story. Thanks for posting
it!"

Thank you!

"It is the "anti-hurst" bumper. Cool.
Are you keeping the patch in the side?"

The patch in the side MUST stay... it is part of what gives the bus that certain something... Attitude? BTW, the lovely multi-layered paint job stays, too... and gets clear-coated.

"Now that is a sweet bus. I love the "logo"
.......this photo is my new desktop."

Jawohl, you are a pervert. Like me. I think that's why I like you.

"Finally!!"

Yeah, yeah, Philo... you know I'm a busy little bitch.

"You would already know this but the jack support needs to be welded to the floor, in a couple of spots."

Done.

"If you really want to match the cool factor of the front... weld that shovel to that rear bumper and any other random shit you can come up with, in fact come over and I'll load you up with alcohol, crazy ideas, (inspiration)
and some scrap metal..
Just Kidding (except for the part about coming over) I am lusting after that work of art."

Art had nothing to do with it... In fact, I think he would cringe. But you and your beer are welcome here anytime!

"I have that same photo of you looking in my bedroom, your kinda creepy... Nice bus. Now I don't have to leave the house Victory"

Giggity giggity goo... be glad you can't see my hands in that pic.

" that front bumper is HOT"

Thanks! It was probably the biggest factor in buying this bus... I had to have it.
