|
|
Hello everyone! I'm here to show off my first bus, a 57 panel (haven't checked the number yet, could be a 58 ). A lot of you probably saw this bus in the classified section a few weeks ago and are probably wondering who's the lucky son-of-a-gun(or however you would like to put it) that got it. This bus was originally posted in Anderson, CA for$3500 but after someone had ripped the seller a new one, I was able to scoop it up for $500! Lucky day for me! After only a year, and countless hours of scouring the Samba for sale section, I have finally entered the type 2 world. So I'll just start posting my pics and ideas and the such as my project progresses. Feel free to share any advice you may have, as I will probably need it! Haha!
So thanks all for looking, reading, watching, and helping in advance! I'll have photos uploaded soon. |

Glad you got it. Is it a $500 bus? Pictures and descriptions, yes. |

If its the one in your gallery, you've got your work cut out for you. What're your plans for it? |

When I got there, this bus was covered in bamboo on the drivers side and had no Beam in it. I made three trip total, two previous trips up to Anderson for this. One to buy it, and another to empty out the pile of parts from within it and to put a front beam in it before making the final trip yesterday to bring it down. Big thanks to Damon and Conrad for helping me yank this off the ground. The previous owner had owned it for 20 years or so before passing away. His son in law was trying to clear the property of all the vehicles on it and didn't want to have to scrap them all, so that was part of his reason for selling it at the price he did.
The rust is pretty obvious. Aside from everything in the pictures, The only rust on the frame is just in front of the front driver's side cross member. |

Well at first I was thinking this would be a badass bus to slam but after further thought, i'm going to bring it back up to stock so I can roll it camping and such (maybe even shasta eventually!). _________________ '68 AS Beetle

$500 seems more than fair for both of you. It looks like a great start.
I have one question, however. Look at this pic in the enlarged version (click on it)-
Do you have two heads? What is it I'm seeing in this pic? It's starting to freak me out, man! _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

The reason for the two heads in the photo is because I had to take it as a panoramic shot. My buddy just happened to move during the process. Sorry if I made people's heads spin _________________ '68 AS Beetle

Better off letting us think you are faster than a digital camera. Good luck getting this one back on the road. Truly looking forward to all the photos you'll have to put up. _________________ the other Joe |

I will join the club. I got my 1958 walk-thru camper for $150 and my 1963 walk-thru camper with a newly rebuilt center section for $400, both here in Chico. That was some years ago, though. That adds up to $550.
Good luck with that beast. It is going to take a lot of work to fix it. _________________ Don't worry; be happy. (Baba) |

So I was looking at the bus this morning with some coworkers, and here's a list of things it needs for rust repair and repair metal:
Inner and outer rockers (both sides)
Driver's side outriggers
Rear corners
A foot of floor on either side
Entire bulkhead
Also, it seems that at some point the entire driver's side might've been crushed in as there is a layer of bondo under the belt line, but it doesn't seem to have any hammer marks on the inside so this is just a theory.
As for parts I'll need:
all suspension and brake parts
Motor and trans
Front seats
Tail lights
Cargo door handles
Drivers side door (current one is rotted)
And passenger door sliding glass
That's about it (off the top of my head).
Just need to decide if I'm going to rat rod it, or Shasta this. No plans to scrap this, I'm in this for the long haul! More pictures to come. _________________ '68 AS Beetle

Long time no update! But now here they are!
About 2 weeks ago managed to get the bus from my work to my driveway so I can finally put some time in to it after hours and on weekends.
My buddy Wally and I were able to push most of the very large dent on the roof out using a floor jack and a 2x4. It still has a crease or two but i'm happy with how it looks.
And this evening I finally gave it a good vacuuming and a bleach bath to sterilize all the possum poo (so much poo T-T) and make breathing a little safer! Well while I was wiping off the dash with some scotch bright pads, I noticed some red paint coming through from under the ugly navy blue paint. So i grabbed some wet-dry sand paper and went at it. First thing to come through was some red, so I continued and noticed the red was a stripe and next to it was a white stripe, (im sure you can guess where this is going!) and thats when I realized that the top of the dash was still blue! A little more sanding and BOOM!
I discovered that my dash was an American flag! This bus mustve had some crazy history, if only I could find a way to discover its past!

Wow that dash is really cool. Are you gonna keep it that way or strip it?
