I think it comes down to how much you want to spend...

If you were doing you own work, the majority of the bodywork looks easily repairable. I'd rather tackle the dents you have than the rot & rust that I have!

The bodywork and repainting could be costly if you had it done at a shop however...

A dark blue sunroof bus? If it were a regular GL, I'd be on the fence, but sunroofs are fairly rare and very cool! I'd keep it and fix it.

I'd keep it but without fixing it, if it were me. provided it's a keeper, mechanically.
. Ok, it's a sunroof. but it's not a camper or a syncro.

I would not mind investing in mech aspects, but just for the look. I would wait. Maybe you'll get lucky and get it fixed for free with an accident...

Dude, that looks like an awesome bus. I've driven around vehicles with body damage WAY more extensive than that. And the sunroof makes it really cool. I would invest a little time and/or money to make the body a little more presentable (but not perfect) and drive the hell out of that thing. If it's good mechanically, I'd say it's a keeper.

Depends on your goal. And it depends on how much you've put into it.

i.e. my Westy? The body? Meh. So-so. But as a newb, I put a fair amount into it, then got into doing a conversion, and, well, was committed. (Or should be. Wink ) Point is, selling mine would be insane. In terms of body work, I touch up, slow down whatever rust I can. And when I'm not, *ahem* getting all type A about things and kind of "restoring" it, I live with the *minor* dentage and enjoy it. Actually I kind of like it. Gives a rough and tumble look and screams: "don't bother breaking into this "POS". Nothing of value here" Wink Anyway, you may find you can do the same. Besides. If you know what's been done, that should count for a lot. I know it does for me. I mean, if you get into another one, it may end up needing more work than yours does. A few dents? Bah!

A Vanagon with a SR is pretty cool. Is it rust free? Then for sure. Keep it.

Another way to look at it. In terms of the general purposes of a Vanagon, a Vanagon is a Vanagon. (flame suit on "zzzzzip!") Twisted Evil But seriously. Yah it's great to have better acceleration, or this, or that. But in terms of the fun/usefulness factor, if it's been serving you well, and just needs maintenance, well, they all do. Welcome to the club! Smile

Neil.

I guess it all depends on your spouse's, neighbor's, and friends personal tastes but there's nothing wrong with that van.
we drive far uglier ones and still get the peace waves and find it no trouble in the parking lots during christmas.
also it takes the stress out of worrying if the babied body will be smooth and pristine when you come out of the movies.

in fact the body/rust treatment is soo good, that those dents/impacts will probably never rust thru in your ownership. ours see salt coated winters and are still sound. the back wheel arch crushed is fairly common in these.

Ohh and is the slider open here while you're on the highway
Or are you and that other vehicle just hanging on the shoulder of the roadway?

If you decide to sell it (and you shouldn't), you might want to prepare yourself for an awful realization:

When I owned my first Vanagon (coincidentally a dark blue '85 GL), I never let anyone else drive it, ever.

When I sold it, and the happy hippie kid from Glenwood Springs was pulling out of my work parking lot, I realized that I had never actually seen it in motion. I had a whole new appreciation for it, and nearly cried. But, it was too late.

Needless to say, I had another one, a Capri Blue '85 GL, within three months.

Very Happy You know, putting new water gaskets on heads etc. on the heads should only cost you about 150 if you do them yourself...
