i think thats a little out of my league.
Of course it's up to you. But I think you may be selling yourself a bit short. There's great video and written walk throughs on various sites, Benplace, Boston Bob, Oldvolkshome, and on this site, to list a few, on how to do the upper end. The cost would be more if you had the heads reserfaced at a machine shop, but even with that, you may save about 500 bucks or so. Or,if you really wanted, you could get new AMC heads at about the same cost your about to give to a shop. But more importantly, you could be gaining the confidence you will need to continue to own these 25 year-old vans. Just do the research first, and be aware of all the major pitfalls....
Are there any other van fans close by that might give you a hand or moral support? Again, it is your choice. |

Do you live close to the border? I am getting bodywork done on our Xterra down in mexico next time I go. Its cheap and if you know who to take it to then you can get good work done for not many pesos. _________________ 89 Bostig powered syncro westy |

It will be a few months before i get the Xterra fixed. But i have another story to share about getting bodywork done in mexico.
In 2007 my wife and I were traveling across Mexico with my uncle and one of his friends.

Unfortunately for me, my westy wasn't running at the time and we had to drive the xterra.
While we were in alittle town in the interior of mexico (Dolores Hidalgo)
we were all riding in my uncles 82' aircooled westy. We stopped at a stoplight but the folks behind us didnt. And my uncle got rear ended on the drivers side. I wish i would have taken before and after pictures. The lower corner was crunched pretty good. Along with the bumper.
We speak enough spanish to where we were able to figure out that the driver of the car doesnt have any insurance. Not that we expected him to.
But fortunately we had a good friend who lived in Dolores who was also fluent in Spanish and English. And just happened to know a good body shop.
So we went to the body shop and the guy said he would fix it for 200 pesos. So the guy who hit us gave him the money and off he went.
We picked up the van late that evening. You couldnt tell that it was ever hit. Even the bumper was straight. (It was dented before the wreck. )
Here's the difference in getting a crappy job done and a good job. You gotta know who your dealing with. And if possible see some of their work.
Either way you wont pay much.
We just happened to know someone who lives there. _________________ 89 Bostig powered syncro westy |

Exactly. If you sell this one and buy another, you may be into even more hidden expense.
Fix it and keep it forever if you like it. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

hello Turtle,
I'm WT's uncle. One interesting clarfiication of note, is that 200 pesos, at the time of the accident he mentioned, was about 20 bucks. At todays exchange rate, it would be about 13 bucks.
I've been living down here in Mexico for going on 6 years now. It never ceases to amaze me the quality of work that some of these guys do working on the side of the street, or in some hole in the wall somewhere.
If I were you, I would just head down there and find someone to help you get a few estimates. If you speak a little Spanish, or can take someone with you who does, you could find a few shops, and once they start competing for your business, you're golden.
