So while crawling about the syncro today I noticed that my muffler is quite rusted through, along with most of my 22 year old exhaust. eventually all the pipes, cat etc needs to be replaced. Would you recommend the ceramic coated exhaust or the regular painted bits? I will be moving to Ohio in august for grad school and this is my daily driver. Thanks. _________________ 86' Syncro 2.2 Vanistan, WBXhaust, ski-pole shifter for +11hp |

Ceramic. My S&S's are four years old now here in the high snow country and are still going strong. This pic is last year, but they still look the same:

Unless you want to watch all the money you spent on the exhaust you just got rust within a few months ,then the only choice is ceramic or stainless. If you are planning on keeping it for a long time and storing in in winter outside then the only choice is stainless. And even then there's cheap and good stainless. |

Actually, I bought mine direct from S&S along with the muffler. I can't imagine the BusDepot S&S being different. I do not think there was a difference, except shipping, S&S is nearly local to me in AZ. _________________ Geology with a Syncro rocks!

can you guys post where you bought your exhaust system (S&S) or where to buy the best stainless steel system? This is something I'm going to have to do sooner rather than later. |

I am having/had(install went smooth, everything fit) great luck with the kit from evwparts! Get the hardware kit and gasket kit from vancafe (copper nuts/quality gaskets)and chuck the crappy gaskets that come w/the exhaust kit! Oh yeah,,,,,p-nut oil on the pipes after your first trip to the beer store! _________________ 91 CARAT |

Ceramic is superior if the cost doesn't scare you. I had it done by Jet-Hot on an exhaust system for a motorcycle (Buell X1) and it had some light rust a few years later. But, far less than it would have had if I'd used barbecue paint.
Jet-Hot would have warrantied the job, but I would have had to disassemble the muffler, and that was a bear when the thing was still unused.
My point is, I expected the system to look great forever, and that really didn't happen. But it was expensive. _________________ Current fleet: Vanagons, two '88 GLs and an 89 Bluestar. Beetles, '63, '64, '72 convertible. Plus, four Subarus and three Prius. Too many cars. |
