I'm doing something similar at the moment

I belive the 40hp big bore pistons will fit as the wrist pin is 20mm but the cylinder will be a lot of work.

Porsche cylinders can be made to work but they are not cheap.

You may be able to use chevy journal con rods ment for later vw engines with overseized bearings (they are 2" 36hp is 50mm) to get the 22mm wrist pin if that helps

Good luck

Seb

what kind of help do you need?
pistons will fit...cylinders only with alot of work stud holes and dimensions ...
you need to open case and heads und cylinders too.
and if you do this you can make your hads or (and) cylinders to your compression ratio...good kuck

what about a 69.5 okrasa crank with 356 piston rods and 22mm pin piston would it work?
is the okrasa crank or stock 36hp crank fit the 356/912 rods?

Its a dark art these early engines and too many people are keeping quiet!

Luckily they always correct me when I'm wrong so heres what I know, please let me know where I mess up!

36hp crank = 50mm rod journals
Porsche crank = 53, 54 or 55 (cant remember of the top of my head)
porsche and later 1300 + vw pistons = 22mm wrist pin
36 and 40hp = 40hp wrist pin
40hp plus barrels have a different stud spacing so won't bolt on

You can get a big bore 83mm piston for a 40hp with the 20mm wrist pin. You can search on the mahle website for products but I can't find a 83mm with a suitable wrist pin

On the engine I'm building now I'm hoping to use

83mm big bore cylinders
Highly modded barrels from a 1500sp (cue angle grinder Shocked )
64mm crank and con rods
Heads with 33in and 30 out and just a bit of porting
A mr okrassa cam
8.5 to 1 comp ratio
Twin 28pci carbs

Hopefully I will get 45-50 bhp.

Good luck with yours

Seb

The 40hp big bore do work and it's not that bad. Turn them 90 degrees and they fit over the stud patern and the way we trimmed them was with a die grinder & cutting disk. We measured how much had to be trimmed then with the grinder scored the fin about half way through grabbed some channel locks and slowly bent up til the fin snapped on the line. All four took about an hour.

The mr okrassa cam is basically 36 reground to a pre a. He sent me the specs and its a fast road, tame race cam acording to my head guy.

As soon as I've sold some bits I'll buy one

You can lose the bushes on the con rods to run 22mm but its not a great Idea and will limit you to about 30,000 miles. Or you could bush up the pisyons but its another thing to go wrong!

Hello-

Have you considered having a set of pistons made to your specs? JE will do it for ~ $800.

BTW, have you read "Souping The Volkswagen"? http://www.oldspeed.ch/pages/press-souping.htm If not, it will probably answer many of your questions.
