I have now have two 1962s!!
I heard about a green 1962 sitting outdoors in some kind of local junk yard (with 2 bay window kombi's). I visited and found this little green guy. I did the deal a few days later.
PROS - 6V, 1300 non original motor - motor runs, Wipers work, RHS lights work
CONS - rust, dent in engine cover, rust, 4 different tyres, rust, no brakes,
She revealed a half decent paint job after two "cut & polishes".
Many of my Type 1 parts collection are able to be used to bring the green 1962 back to life and the aim is to become my daily drive. My ultimate aim is for a 1962 Karmann Ghia, so maybe this green one is a stepping stone.
The grey one is my weekly drive with 31000 miles on it.

This wss a few weeks ago but i bought this 66 for 3000 for the bug and $500 for a set of centerlines. It was a coworkers first car, his father bought it in 82. The last county sticker was from 2008.
A few days before i bought it they bought a engine from my mechanic, i was quoted $2500 for that engine a few weeks back. They did not even test drive it afterwards.
Brakes, clean, polish, clean some more, sand, primer, rattle can.
My goal is to do one project or improvement a week at minimum. Right now i am trying to return it to stock. I have replaced the aftermarket shifter and steering wheel. Need to replace the doors (ill trade if anybody wants the solid windows) then i am going to raise the car back to factory heigth and ut bumpers back on. I may weld the sun roof shut. |

These two statements are diametrically opposed
In general, sunroof cars in nice shape fetch more $$ than non-sunroof cars in the same condition. Weld it shut and you will not only devalue it, it won't likely fetch as much as a stock non-sunroof car in the same condition. But it's your car _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

A few year back I got my 1964 sunroof Herbie, that I'm now restoring, picked it up for a decent price for Michigan, and I'm pretty sure the motor has been rebuilt when it had great compression and the the fly wheel was super clean and the clutch looked new, I think it would of been over 25 years since its been rebuilt, but less than 3,000 miles according to the speedometer. It had newer seat covers too. It was used for radio remotes by a radio station the guy I bought it from used to own. But a realllllyyyy rusty body, I have a build thread going on it now also. When I was getting it on the car hauler, a frog hopped out that was living under there.
BTW it was very nicely painted when I got it, it was painted like Herbie, also bondo (sorry to swear ) covered up accident damage and rust. |

Here is the 62 I just bought. It is rust free and was restored at some point and then forgotten in a barn for.a while. Came with a 1970 1600 single port. I think I can fix it up and enjoy it for a while.
I sold my ratty 73 with 66 fenders last fall, and bought a nice MK4 Jetta TDI to daily drive.
Now, still DD'ing the Jetta, I can put some time and money into a nice old bug. I can't wait to get started! I brought the engine home to prepare to reinstall, and ordered some new swingaxle boots. No idea yet if the brakes work or not. The interior is still nice looking.
I don't think I'll have to buy many parts, really, but time will tell.

Signed up today after spotting this bug in the back part of our old farm today.
Its pretty rough and partly submerged in a creek.
Anything worth salvaging off this? |

The snow pack is the most valuable resource in those photos. Anybody who says anything beyond the horn button and its guts is playing a crazy guessing game with you. _________________

The steering wheel might be worth a few bucks if it isn't cracked, probably cost more to ship it than what it's worth though. Chances are slim there's anything worth grabbing based on the condition seen in the pics and the fact it's hanging out in a creek, but it couldn't hurt to take a look in the trunk to see if there are any tools or accessories.
Just a rough guess, the car looks to be a '61 to '64 model. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Interesting that your post on your Herbie was post No. 53. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Okay it was an Ebay find. But what a find. 1965 Fontana Grey all OG.15K on the milage. I'm the 3rd owner. This is my 5th Bug, and my 1st one since 2009. Some guy that called himself a friend kept bugging me to sell my 66 after my wife had passed away and I had just returned from Iraq. Like a dummy I sold it to him. So I finally filled my Bug void with this beauty. My mind is right again.
