As we get older, and night time pea visits become more obligatory,
Which, in van, conveniences have been favored. I mean the real portable toilets. Considering a Thetford model 465E. Any( constructive) feedback would be appreciated.
You'll all get older someday! :>) _________________ It's all in your mind.

We have a Thetford 155 that we've been "Using" for several years now and think it's the greatest. Being relatively small, it's easy to manage and not terribly heavy when carrying the lower part to the dumping station.
Because it's not a "Full height" model, we currently put it on a short (commercial plastic) stool with a sheet of non-skid rubber matting for stability, when we set up camp. It doesn't have the electric flush (has a manually operated pump) but then no batteries.
Somewhere on my "To Do" list is the making of a custom cabinet with a cushion on top to house it in. For now, the cover that my wife made for it is serving nicely.
BTW, we're in our 60s and know the "Feeling" of convenience. LOL

I have the thetfors 245, hand powered pump, works great. One water tank fill up lasts for 3-4 fills of the sewage tank. We keep it right behind the passenger seat, works great as another seat. We made a nice cloth cover for it and nobody ever suspects s its a toilet. _________________

just picked up a thetford a few weeks back from wallyworld. our house pumbing was out of commission for a few days, so I picked one up. It was on the 'to buy' list anyway. Well designed, and seems to function fine. Not stinky at all. Also planning on building a box for it to make a footstool / extra seat fot it.... _________________ Fritz - '86 Syncro Tintop, Camper interior

I bought a couple different toilets, I have more than one van.
My (I think 3gallon) Thetford is taller than wide and falls over unless tied down. Not recommended. It also has an air button, that can leak, and a spout you have to rotate to dump.
My 2.5 gallon Dometic SeaLand is wider than tall, AND it also fits under the lip of the bottom bed, when the westy rear bench seat is extended. Also the Dometic has no air vent to leak, and no spout to rotate to dump, much simpler.
The Thetford does not fit under the bed, its too tall.
I also tried the Pett bag based Porta Potti. I returned it with a broken leg. It is also unstable, 3 legs, and the bags are very pricy.
I wont use a porta potti for bowel movements, cant stand the dumping experience. If I MUST do #2 in the van, I use a tall kitchen garbage bag over a bucket, and dispose of immediately in a trash can.
moral of the story, measure the height to the bottom of the bed, buy a toilet that is not taller, such as the 2.5 gallon Dometic. |

There are some small and quality composting toilets out there as well. They might take a little more jury rigging but are a sweet system.
Never heard of a composting toilet? Google it.
"we currently put it on a short stool"
Thats the worst pun i have seen here for awhile. |

Well, pooing in the van is far better than driving doubled over in pain looking for the nearest toilet, assuming I wasn't somewhere that I could dig a hole and take a crap.
When I get up in the morning I have about 3 minutes before the inevitable happens, with a porta potty I can have a nice leisurely morning, without one it starts my whole day off in an unpleasant manner.

"Who wants to smell Poo Poo in their van"
Composting toilets have zero smell...and you dont have to dump them every day. If you do the research you will fall in love with them if your the kinda' person who cant wait for a rest stop to poo.
I just use public toilets myself but i know some folks have "issues". |

I have no problem with public toilets, I just don't like de-popping the top and getting the van ready to drive right after I get out of bed to find a toilet to then set the van back up and make breakfast, and if your on the road for 1 month+ that routine gets old quick. _________________

again, 5 gallon pickle bucket...a bit of kitty litter in a plastic bag, and, if poo needs to happen in the van, it can....After several years on a sailboat with a portapotty that we had to tote off the dock, put in the car and dump off site......we just can't have that anymore.
Stole the idea off of this guy, who BTW, must be related to me in a previous life http://www.bumperdumper.com/
Tie the bag up and toss it out at the next rest area. Works just fine for my family.

I use a newer model Dometic that they came out with recently. I have the 972 http://www.sealandtechnology.com/productpages.asp?pid=94
When I was shopping for a potty I was looking for something with a holding tank that is larger than the freshwater flush tank. This model has that and is fairly tapperd at the top.
The flushing system is pressurized with air and works fine. 2.5 gallons of waste capacity is enough for a weekend with 2 adults. If I was constantly doing trips longer than a weekend with no place to empty the holding tank I'd go for the 5 gallon.
