Looks good to me! I love the color of the shroud against the body color, and the red wires are a nice contrast. I hate the oil cooler, but you already said you're working on moving it.

I don't understand the problem you're having with the seals though, even with the diagrams. But as a general rule, engine tins fit like crap, and take a lot of patience to get installed, especially when you have to use aftermarket parts. Can you take a picture of the part that you're having trouble with?

In my experience, the pulley tin will not clear an aftermarket oil pump with a full-flow fitting in it, so that little bit will have to be trimmed most likely. So you're not doing anything wrong, it's just a common problem there.

Good job, man! keep it up, and have fun with it!

Thanks Roach, and Mayhem

I used cast iron engine paint for all the tin. Smile

I figured out a solution for the ill fitting tin and seal problems. You are correct with the pulley tin requiring some trimming. I flipped the seal over installing it incorrectly from what I have seen, which offered more clearance. The upper cylinder tins do seal against it now.

The main problem was the breast plate running into the header, and not bolting up so nicely to the upper cylinder tins... I can fabricate a new one which is no big deal.

Once the oil cooler is moved I will install the deck lid propped open on the bottom only. Considering the natural vacuum created by a totally sealed engine compartment will not be created my may concern is shielding the exhaust heat from the engine. I do have the firewall plate installed too.

The back tires sticking out are still a little "mullet" for me. Sad

Well, summer is almost over and it's time to plan for this winter.

In light of a few things I've noticed with the car the body is coming off the pan as soon as I complete finishing the garage. Considering the stuff I want to do it makes sense to go that far.

Last month the master cylinder failed... That was fun!

Most of my plans seem the same as I start to ponder new parts.

The engine has a bit of an odd noise so I'll go through it. Probably new pistons and cylinders so I can get rid of the thinwall 92's
It's quick enough for what I want to do so I'll leave the FK8 and 44 IDF's.

The trans weaps a bit of fluid so I'll go through that too.

I may do a little work to the heads though.

As for the chassis. I'm still torn on body color, interior color, and wheels.
I do know the colors will be OE VW. The original color was Ruby red but I've been kicking around mango, another green, or panama biege.

Intererior color of choice is still red at this time.

Disc brakes for sure but I'm not sure if I want to stick with wide five or go smaller bolt circle and use a more modern rim in the 17" flavor. The purist in me says stick to the wide five, so we will see.

Another idea I had was to run the painted slotted 356 type wheels with no caps to go for kind of an outlaw look. Minimal, simplistic, but functional.

Suspension wise since everything will be replaced I'll narrow the beam a bit and run a fully threaded coilover front and back eliminating the torsions. I may even go IRS on the back if I decide to go a bit more modern with the look of the car. Coming from a strong racing history all the negative camber if I decide to go low really bothers me.

Sometimes I hate starting a project and making all the decisions....

But In short it will be "GFK clean" with my flavor. Smile

In order to start work you must have the proper space. Smile

Man, I'm glad to see a little light at the end of the tunnel. Between work, my girl's parents house, the garage, and building a shed this weekend the last month or so have been so busy.

I started with two bare walls, dirty concrete, and a bunch of mess. I moved in with my girlfriend so the garage was pretty much a catch all. Sad

The lofts the PO of the house hung to the right were way to big and a bitch to take down. Dimensions of garage are 25x16.

10 sheets of pegboard, 3 epoxy floor kits, some lumber, and a whole lot of cleaning I'm this far. Smile

The floor laid out really well. I decide to use the speckles since the concrete had some flaws.

I still need to paint the wall on the left and finish around the door. I plan to print some pictures I've taken over the years for that wall. Smile

The stuff on the floor to the right still needs a home. I also plan to relocate the shelf to make room for 4 foot bench will will hold my vise and drill press.

Lowes had counter tops on sale last week so I decided to pick up a 6 footer for my bench. In total I have less than $75 into it with paint.

I haven't mounted my grinder yet but you can see my spiffy new air compressor. Smile

Now it's almost time to take the body of the pan of my car for resoration. Smile

Well,

I am still on schedule as of this week. The car is coming apart sooner than I hoped but after some inspection I feel it's ready to be freshened up. I'll let the pictures do some speaking.... Overall, it's as solid as I thought so far.

Interior and the seats I didn't like removed

The sunroof area is very solid

Here is the original color, in OG paint exposed.

Heater channels and other bits are very solid. No holes I can see as of yet.

Yeah, I need a new harness.... I can't believe the mess.

Rusty, rusty, but everything is very solid and I seen no signs of any patching anywhere.

After much inspecting and looking for witness marks I don't see any real patching our major body work.... Until everything gets media blasted I think I'm dealing with an original pan. Smile

Well man, I took it all apart, removed one pan and it's been sitting because life got in the way and a bunch of changes took place.

As much as it pains me I might sell it once spring hits if the money is right but I'm going to regret it. It's far too solid of a project and one of my favorite cars.

The pan ended up being original, the driver side is great. All the sheet metal seems to be original while the heater boxes and everything else are wonderful. I'm not surprised considering it was from California and had less than 5000 miles put on it over the past 20 or so years.

It will be a great project for someone if I sell it. You don't come across too many this solid around these parts.

Thanks for the pic Sporty.

After much internal debate I'm going to keep it and get back on it as soon as the weather warms up.

It's way too solid of a car and to good of a project to get rid of without regretting it.
