Is anyone else watching? Streaming live on youtube and also showing live on Discovery channel and Velocity.
He's currently at 97K feet and climbing...

nice.
This is yet another milestone in the continuing pursuit of space exploration.
I'm excited to be sharing it with my son. I imagine it's similar to my parents watching the first record jump back in the 60's. _________________ It's not how wide your hatch is, it's what you do with it.

I couldn't even imagine doing something like that. I mean i feel like a speeding bullet in my bug at 65mph. I couldn't beleive going over 700 mph just by myself without like a ship or plane or something. |

WOOHOO! That was fun to watch! I tuned in just a few minutes before he jumped. Watched it with my wife and daughter.

. Oh... Ok. I believe i heard that it will land somewhere in the middle of the desert. Better in the middle of nowhere than on somebody's house. |

Exactly! It's humans like Felix that propel us towards closer and closer to living life like Spaceballs. _________________ It's not how wide your hatch is, it's what you do with it.

Agreed, that first step had to be the wildest thing anyone has done in years, wow!
But I also have some major respect for the dude that did it in the late 50's, no cozy capsule or computers just a fancy chair, sittin around waiting for 3 hours at -80 or whatever ungodly temperature it is up there thinking "I'm really gettin up there and I've gotta step off" has got to build major character. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Agree 100%...pretty much most of the planning was based on theory back then. Respect to both gentlmen for sure.
I like this quote from Felix:
Quote: |
"When I was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble, you do not think about breaking records anymore, you do not think about gaining scientific data," he said after the jump. "The only thing you want is to come back alive." |

Its sad that sending some thrill seeker up to NEAR space has turned into my generations moon landing... Whelp... it's all we've got left.
Tragedy for science. |

Seriously? Prior to posting, did you even bother to look up the topic?
It was more than a circus stunt for a "thrill seeker", it was done in collaboration with NASA to improve future spacesuits.
Quote: |
Felix Baumgartner hit Mach 1.24, or 833.9 mph, according to preliminary data, and became the first person to reach supersonic speed without traveling in a jet or a spacecraft after hopping out of a capsule that had reached an altitude of 128,100 feet above the Earth |
You're right. This was a tragedy for science. _________________ It's not how wide your hatch is, it's what you do with it.

Red-bull teams up with NASA for the most X-treme spacesuit research EVER! Next time an astronaut decides to skydive from space we're going to be totally prepared. This completely makes up for cancelling the shuttle program.
Look, I get it. It's interesting. It just struck me as an unfortunate commentary that this is what we're stuck with in regards to manned exploration.

Nobody ever said this was to "make up" for canx'ing the shuttle program.
The Space Shuttle program has come to an end because it was an old, outdated transport system. While it served its purpose over the coarse of 30 years, it was time to move on. And that's just what we (as a civilization) are doing.
Developing the next suit to handle many extremes including above mach speeds, such as Felix did on his descent, is one small aspect in continuing development within the space program.
Think about it. Your Double Cab didn't just appear. It started as a Panel scribbled on a piece of paper in the 40's. The first jump in 1960 proved it could be done. The second record setting jump today, proved it could be done at an altitude and speed that far exceeded what was done previously.
If you think "that's all we got left" then might I suggest you educate yourself on the space program. _________________ It's not how wide your hatch is, it's what you do with it.
