I hit 6400 lbs once with 4 people and a very full load. I regularly hit 5400 lbs when packed for camping. Oregon has roadside truck scales anyone can pull into so I check often. |

Curb weight is a vehicle ready drive, with full tanks, sans cargo and people.
Gross weight is your vehicle loaded to the max with people and cargo. |

I'd read it was 3460 for a '91 Carat, which I've got, seems strange that the westy would be lighter...
Having said that, I haven't weighed mine either, so I wouldn't really know. _________________ '74 Bug - Gone

We hit 5400 in a 2wd Westy with the family (2 adults - 3 kids) with a full combat load. Subtracting all the "extra" stuff and people we were likely closer to 4600 or so. These things are heavy! _________________ '85 Westy |

I have not found a source that lists the wt. specs. for a Vanagon, and Vanagon Westy -- only for a 1978.
Anyone know of a URL? |

I have been intending to run my van over a scale to get the empty vehicle weight but every time I went by a scale I seemed to be loaded. Today the opportunity finally presented itself as I was waiting for a train right next to a sawmill scale.
weight is 4320 lbs on my tin top syncro
2.5 Subie engine
about 1/2 tank of fuel
After mkt bumpers, swing away rack and 11 gallon saddle tank are the only weight adding accessories _________________ 1989 Syncro Hardtop, 2.5 '07 Subaru

Our westfalia weighed 4100 lbs(checked on a scale) when packed for a couple week trip although we removed the back cabinet since we like the bed space. _________________ '81 Westfalia Subaru EJ22

I dropped off a load of stuff at the dump and they weighed me and my van on their scale. 3760 lbs total, -220 lbs (me) = 3540. This gives you an idea of a way to get yourself weighed if you don't have a state run weigh station near you. I bet if you ask nicely they would weigh you for free if you didn't have anything to drop off. _________________ 83.5 Vanagon 1.9L Automatic

I've been across the scales many times. 5500# about every time, loaded with me and wifey onboard. Figure #350 for us, couple pounds for being a syncro, and about 500# of bumpers and crap. _________________ 86 syncro CHC, NorthWesty subbie 2.5, decoupler, locker, custom interior, 225/75r16 Duratrack's on CLK's, Toyo cabin heater, ARB fridge, 300w Zamp Solar, Gowesty bumpers/skid/rails, Fiama awning

I have a reprint of a review of my 84 Westy that lists the weight as 3370. Hard to imagine how passengers, fuel and gear can make up 2100 pounds. I wonder if those truck scales are not very accurate at the 4-5k range, since they are made to weigh much heavier vehicles. |
