Also, for the Dormobile "Bay models the elevating roof was moved forwards" and only left about a foot from the top of the windshield back to where the top starts. The Westys utilized the same hole that they used for other tops which was further back and centered over the sliding door, like his.

EDIT:

These are real Dormobiles, notice how far forward the top is and the windows:

Hey I am not trying to downplay your find, it is a really nice bus and is actually a rare combination even as a Westy. Congrats!

Clean her up some and try not to hack into anything Wink I would love to get my hands on one someday but they are few and far between...

EDIT:

Here is another one which was bought up here close to me but unfortunately she sold it again and I couldn't buy it. Similar top but different interior, still a Westy. This is one of about 5 including yours I have seen.

No problem! I appreciate your knowlege. I love this place and love learning about the history of these vehicles....

My plan is to slam it and paint it flat black with red rims.....

Caleb? Any help here?

Although Adorno probably came up with the term first because his writings on the subject were done pre-VW Dormobile, they actually have different meaning.

The Dormobile we know and love came from the French word dormir which means "to sleep". Go tell your friends Razz

You can't move for Dormobiles here in the UK. Generally considered the best conversion, mainly because of the skylights and 8 feet of headroom with the roof up!

In the early 70's there was a disagreement between VW, Westfalia and Dormobile over where Dormobile cut the hole in the roof (more forward position as per Caleb's post). VW felt that the larger dormobile hole lowered rigidity of vehicle and if memory serves, after a certain date they wouldn't sell any vans to Dormobile for conversion.

Do dormobiles have a bed up top? Also, I like the looks of yours better than a true dormobile. The top looks funky so far forward on those real ones.

Beautiful bus Bro! There is a Ex-Pat Brit who has a true Dormobile, (I think 1972), that drives in and out of our neighborhood often every summer. He keeps his Sailboat down at the local Marina . He has owned it since new. It is of course a Right Hand Drive which really makes it stand out around here. Very Cool any way you slice it. Cool VW Logo

Can anybody point me to pics of a genuine Dormobile interior with the bed extended? I've got a 1971 that is MOSTLY all there, but missing the table I believe the front of the bed must be supported by the table. Seems like a really lame design to me. It would really limit activity in the bed with only 24 inches above the mattress. :<(
This is a very strange vehicle. It is LHD but has FIXED vent window glass. Has belly pans. (Or HAD belly pans, more correctly)
I assume it was made for US sale, because it has US lights, not European ones.
(I know, I should post some pics.)

Beautiful bus! I think that's pretty much what mine looked like when it came from the factory (although it was a US model, with LHD and speedometer/odometer, etc. and a Westy interior.

I suppose that of all of us, you're in the best position to figure out what's up with Dormobile. Their web site is still up (and "under construction") but I've mailed and emailed them at the posted address without responses. Have they gone belly-up again?
