It looks like the Beatnik Bandit. Created in 1961 by "Big Daddy" Ed Roth, but this one has been painted blue.

Gotta love that Trabant.......talk about a model of safety!......unshrouded motorcycle style cylinders inside the front engine compartment .....with the fuel tank and battery!

I read somewhere that Russia Bio-Engineered some sort of bacteria that would dissolve the Trbant back to the elements. After all it was considered the worlds worst polluting motor vehicle ever produced. There were millions sent to the breakers.

Nah.... ....its not true. But.....it was a really interesting plastic. The reason the guy in the video called it "bakelight".....is because it used phenolic resin.....just like bakelight.
But....it was made 100% of WASTE PRODUCTS. It used phenols from the East Gerrman dye and chemical industry....and recyled cotton fiber from Soviet industries.
It was a strong but really impure plastic. As it ages in UV.....it produces phenyl alcohols on the surface.....and as it wears away....these cheap plastics can get cracks.
These were not like "good" high quality bakelight. As the plastic the Trabant was made of got micro cracks and surface fissures from heat, cold and UV......water leaked in and the cotten trash filler....started to ROT.
Did you see that one in the video that looked like it was growing moss/mildue on the surface?.....thats because it was! As the moss and mildue grows.....the plastic just rots apart. Ray |
