im not exactly sure what other years use tarboard up in the engine compartment, i know it changed to a honeycomb type in later busses, but im thinking of making a few sets of compartment sound deadner for early bays. im going to use the type of tarboard that is used for bugs and ghias, a waffle like impregnated paper stock.... _________________ once you realize im not impressed we will get along just fine |

71s do not use tarboards, thats a 68-69 and perhaps a 70 thing.

If you mean the 2 part black fiber board that holds up the 1" thick factory foam boards above the engine, then I am in the process of getting some made in either ply or black HDPE. I'll let you know how it turns out. The old ones were warped and brittle, and I wanted something that looks good and lasts. I did contemplate 1/8" aluminum sheet powder-coated semi-gloss or wrinkle black.

I have an Early 68 & there are no tar boards in the engine bay. My early 68 also does not have the metal covering the gastank.
I know my previous 70 had the boards but can not remember if my first 68 kombi had them. _________________ 68 BUS

We are talking about the stuff on the inside top of the engine bay, right?
Mine is masonite with furry insulation sandwiched under it held in place with clear plastic. There's still a VW part number on the insulation fuzz on the inspection hatch still so it's OEM. |

Ok, I "might" be interested in a set for a '71, assuming they were flame retardant. I wet my existing ones and was able to get them semi-straight.
I've read where others had made their own and I contemplated the same. But I couldn't find the appropriate flame retardant material. Can you? _________________ Add life to your years, instead of years to your life. |

You don't want to use tarboard like bugs use. It is just tar impregnated heavy paper board. It sags big time as it has no strength when hot. Even when it is on the vertical surfaces of a bug it ends up sagging and drooping. Thats why on a bug firewall there are many of the pointed "spikes" to hold it in place. And it still ends up sagging with time. It would be no good on a overhead surface. Additionally it wouldn't work as it has to support the weight of the insulation panels. The '71, '70, and maybe earlier busses used a hardboard equivilant of masonite. It's painted black and not impregnated. When I remade mine I sealed them with Thompson's water seal to prevent future damage from absorbing moisture and then good paint sealing. Also the fiberglass insulation panels were originally sealed with a plastic film wrap. Do a Samba search as this has been covered in detail a few times already.
part numbers for 3 of the 4 fibreglass insulation panels.

Wow, Desertbusman thanks for that info.
How is that stuff different to masonite? Density or something?
I'm interested that your insulation is fiberglass. I think mine is fuzzy coloured thready stuff sort of like carpet underlay or some seat stuffings.
Not sure if it's a '75 or an Australian thing. I'll grab the part number of the inspection plate stuffing tomorrow. Don't feel like shifting the tools off the bed tonight. |

The original might not be quite as dense as masonite. And it looks a little like press board where flakes were pressed together although much more less flaky. And actually it might have been the same material as was used on the OG door panels. Evidently that exact material might not be available any longer. Cheap brand new door panels are made from a mickey mouse type heavy paperboard. Good ones are made of masonite. I think the key to using any of that type material is water proofing it. _________________ 71 Superbug

my boards ive seen in both my 70 and 69 are like that of a bug, also there are 1 inch clips that fold and hold the boards in place. the boards have warped and are on their way out, they are not falling apart but they dont fit exactly like they should. my idea would only be for deadening purpose and im not exactly sure what effects if any on cooling it will have. it will definately make my compartment nicer. look ill cut a few sets and display them , and if any have interest please let me know. _________________ once you realize im not impressed we will get along just fine |

I should have a set for my '71 next week. Looking at masonite cut by laser or high temp black HDPE waterjet cut. When I have an idea on price I will post. Also running a set of caliper mounts from 6061 T6 billet at the same time. I will need to do a little finishing before doing a trial mount on the bus. Several Mercedes rotors will fit depending on look required.
