ok fine, all this stuff looks great in photos or on a sunny day at a summer meet but is anyone really planning on using these devices under the conditions for which they were designed?
i'd be pulling a fair way off the road and parked up long before visibilty got to be so bad. and in serious cold damp fog i'd rather have working gas or propane heater and a bottle of whisky than all that stuff screwed on my bus. |

Yo, buzz kill, chicks dig fog lights.
But seriously, any added level of visibility for me as the driver and my vehicle to other drivers is worth it. At least a few times each month I am at the beach with the kids, surf fishing, kayaking or otherwise having fun...even in the "winter". Here is sunny California we often get a morning/evening marine layer at the beach (fog like conditions as it cools down). These lights will come in handy while navigating the coastline. As soon as I can find a nice red rear fog light I will put that on too.
BTW, I am pretty sure the yellow lens lights are illegal here in CA. |

I have amber/yellow foglights on my bus. They are perfectly legal.

Mine are pointed slightly outward. It helps to give you a few extras seconds to hit he brakes as the deer clears the fence headed for the road. _________________ ". . . In beer there is freedom,

Looks really great! Nice work & good placement. Its a tough call drilling on your van, even if its only the bumper. :2gunfire: Looks nice though. _________________ 1978 Sage Green P22 Westfalia

I finally got around to wiring up the fog lights. The relay and wiring came in the kit. I replaced the kit supplied toggle switch with a Bosch lighted pull switch. To secure the wires at the bumper I used spring clips that are used to hold trailer wiring in place and clipped the wires to the bumper brackets.
The wiring schematic called for a 16 amp fuse on the power lead to the relay so I installed an accessory 4 fuse box with a clear cover.
Fuse 1 is for the relay power, fuse 2 is for the silver socket/stereo switch and the fog light signal switch. Fuse 3&4 are 8 amp fuses for the left and right fog lights. I still need to dress down the wiring a bit but the lights work.

[ Anyone have any better pics of the factory original front and rear fog lights than these I have found? ]
Here is a picture of an original set.
Here is the grommet for the connection wires.
Here is the part number.
Hope that helps.
Some more info for yellow or white fog lights from Mr.Larry Gedney at http://www.gi.alaska.edu/ScienceForum/ASF5/593.html changed my aspect to this matter. |

I had to find the rear one and take a photo.
The part number.
It has a black cover for a later baywindow,I think the early style is chrome.
Here is the switch for the front and the rear fog lights.
The part number.

Most of the time I am trying to find them at the basement.
Ive been collecting parts for our family bus a long time know.
Many of the parts have shipped to Greece from all over the world through TheSamba classifieds and other forums however you will be surprised if you try your local vw dealer.
When you find the part number through Etka then its easy. |

nice to find the right manufacturer and all, but $62 for some wire and a red lens to mount on the rear bumper is nuts. it doesn't look quite like a perfect match, but it's always hard to tell from the pics...

I've learned the benifits of having a connection in the wiring under the body to allow for the lamps to be easily unplugged if you ever have to remove the bumper. I picked up a round 4 prong water resistant plug then smeared the connections with di-electric silicon which repells the water but still permits the conduction of electricity. Have never had an issue with the connection going bad. |

Front and rear fog light wiring diagram.
If there is no space for the extra relay, an extra base part #531941845 (161937501B)?? can be adapted at the original fuse box from the right side. |
