hey rebuilt my wbx into a 2.2 and can only get pressure once, after i prime the pump.... seems like the pickup is restricted or something???

I removed the oil pump and everything seems normal, blow compressed air through the passage and can hear it blowing bubbles on the suction side. And on the other side i have a gauge tee-d in with the pressure switch and it builds 30psi when blowing into it.

any ideas???

ive already dumped the oil several times....

Was the rear end of your van jacked up ? Try jacking up the front end so the oil pump is submerged in engine oil.

tried that to... thanks thou

pulled engine and torn it apart, cant see anything wrong. some more inspections and back together tomorrow.

hopefully it was just something weird, air locked somehow? I even used a vac pump and pulled oil from the sump, thru the pump and out the filter housing.

Just wondering. When you have the oil pump cover off, did the oil pump turn when you turn the crank shaft ? If you use a type 1 cam and the Vanagon oil pump, the pump will not turn because the drive will not reach the slot at the cam.

Also, is the oil pressure relieve valve piston and spring in and the piston can move freely ?

There is only a few thou clearance from the oil pump cover and the oil pump gear, it should be very difficult to suck oil out this way.

If the oil pump is engaging the camshaft , and is turning ...your pressure relief spring/piston are correctly installed , try packing the oil pump with Vaseline. It will "prime " the pump, which can be an issue dry.

Its all stock, the pump engages alittle over a 1/4"

All the relief stuff is there and free...

It took a fair bit of vacuum to pull the oil thru

I packed it with assembly lube, I normally do this on all my aircooled engines too, but this is my first wbx.

This is driving me nuts!

So you get pressure the first time you fire the engine up, but on repeated tries you do not? How tight does your pump fit to the case? Did you use a gasket under the cover or not?

There's a scrap of rag or paper towel or something in the oil suction head.

That was my exact thought too, so pulled the engine and tore it apart on thursday evening. Went over everything and couldn't find any issues! So I put it back together and installed it on friday. Within 5 seconds I had pressure, and every other time I would have pressure within 2 seconds after that.... Then I proceeded to still go camping all weekend with the new found power of the 2.2L! Its awesome!

34 hours of stress to find nothing... Never seen anything like it before.

Pump was snug slidding into the case, I sanded the pump face flush with the gears and used a .004 gasket installed dry.
