It's water-cooled, but oh well. My mom and I pulling my new Radio Flyer red wagon in the alley behind our house in West Allis, WI in September of 1986. That's our 1978 Dasher in the background. My parents bought it new before I was born. When I was real young, I was riding in it with my dad, and we got in a minor accident that messed up the front fender. I referred to it as the "crunch car" for several years after. Around '92-'93 the trans got stuck in second gear and we got rid it. It was getting pretty rusty anyway by that time. I haven't seen a functional Dasher since about 2000.

Nice to see a late Dasher here! I had a new "facelift" '78 2-door sedan like your parent's in late '77; mine was white. Then, after my few years in Germany for first job, I found a silver '80 Dasher 4-door hatchback diesel in summer '83 which I drove for a few years as my only car, then as a utility vehicle after getting a job that offered a modern company car. The 48 hp 1500 cc forced me to stay slow after driving a Golf GTI and 5-cyl. Passat while in Germany . I kept the Dasher thru '99 when the timing belt broke... Drove it about 80,000 miles in those 16 years, starting with a cross-USA sightseeing trip in late '83. The large hatch was practical, since with the rear seat folded down, I was able to lie down stretched out in the flat floor for sleeping in campgrounds. Also carried 3 ACVW engines back there for a swap meet in ~ '94.
With your photo, I should dig up and post a few of mine from my 2 cars...
I think the 2-door like yours and mine is a handsome vehicle, but like you, they are hardly ever seen anymore even at big VW meets.
