Looks like you ingested pieces of metal that banged around the combustion chambers, jammed a valve, breaking the rocker assembly. I wonder what it was? |

Give me a front one shot from the crank pulley end to see if it is a universal case.
I have seen that a few times. Washer, nut, accelerator pump nozzles.
Never did figure out what this one was.

That's not a universal case. It's a T1. It will still work with the T3 tins but you'll need a custom filler/dipstick. _________________ '54 Bug, '59 Speedster replica, '65 Ghia (in pieces), '66 Notch, '80 930, '85 C10, '89 928, '96 LT4 'Vette, '03.5 Esprit, '05 Elise, '06 Murcielago |

ok, sooooo has anyone done this before or does anyone have pics of how this would be done?? There's someone nearby my with a seized T3 motor, I was going to get the tins from him anyway but I might be able to get the case from him too. What would be the best option? |

This re-built 67 square engine only needs to be bolted in for $1200 shipped on a pallet(wrapped in plastic) to SoCal! 125 lbs compression starts/runs excellent! The stock exhaust is on the blue engine($900 shipped) shown under "66 sunroof" in my ads/photobucket. Take your choice of stock or EMPI exhaust. Both have heater boxes hooked up.

Yeah, I've got a converted 73 bug engine in my 65 Notch. It's been in there for 7 years. I modified the breather so I could add oil (I used a bug unit, and reworked the road draft tube), and lengthened the dip stick handle to make it easier to reach. It wasn't very hard to convert, since the long blocks are basically the same. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Looking at your case, it looks like the case needs linebored too. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

I dropped the case off with Don @ Vee Dub Parts Unlimited who's taking it to a machine shop for me. Don @ Vee Dub has been super helpful on everything including helping me save money. But yeah he mentioned a linebore among other things that he would take care of. Beyond that I need new pistons and cylinders and am gonna see if I can have the heads machined or if I need new ones. |

And away you go!!
See, it's easy...
Make sure you take extra time upon re-assembly to make sure that everything goes together like it should.
The problem with stuff that has been monkeyfusked, is that it's easy to follow past mistakes.
My on-going learning process with the late FI bus has been like that.
The PO only put about 75% of the parts back on the motor..
Every time i take apart another late bus motor,
i go "oh, wow, look at that part! how cool. i never knew thay had that part there...."
You can take apart a dozen of these motors, and see the same part missing.
If you ever take apart one that the factory in Germany put together, you will make all kinds of amazing discoveries....
Show us pics of each step during assembly, and we can let you know what is missing/wrong, or whatever...
Now, you just need to get that car a set of 44 DCNFs.. Preferrrably NOS _________________ Bus Motor Build

So, to bring the thread up to date aside from my motor problems, this is how the Pig sat when I first got her with all her problems
Me and my little bro waiting for the tow truck on day one
I don't mind it being so low, but the rear tires were rubbing when I bought her, the front had Porsche adapters and space saver spare tires on it. Also, it had a rear disc conversion but no e-brake which I'm told is a common thing on the Type 3's
I picked up this disc brake kit from licensepl8s and his son had fabbed a piece which you see above to utilize the e-brake. Now I'm not one to compromise, and I was loving the look of the deep dish cookie cutters out back so I went to Project Imports in Anaheim and had them role the rear fenders. The guys did a great job and really took their time.
They only rolled the fender down as far as need be to avoid any complications
Next I took the adapter plates out of the front and got some Empi rotors that were pre-drilled with the Porsche pattern. That brought the wheels in enough to put a real tire in and get rid of those ridiculous spare tires.
Nothing crazy here, installed seat belts and my e-brake.
My dash, my wheel and of course the most important... my Ugly Doll.
My neighbor and I built these risers one night to try and keep things a little cooler under the hood there, nothing crazy but I like the look.
Don at Vee Dub told me these tail lights were kinda rare, I'm not too sure.
Just a trunk shot, had to make sure the downhill board fit otherwise I'd have no use for the car
Here are a few outside shots of how the Pig sits right now.
Per the request of my neighbor who has made fun of me every step of the way while simultaneously telling me how bad he wants one of his own... The Fasty as she sits right now is powered by D Bag... oh wait that's me.
Anyway the pancake power is soon to be and I'll be knocking out the rest of the kinks that the PO's didn't care to take care of or overlooked. Either way I love the way this car looks just sitting still and I find myself wandering out to the garage just to stare... and yes I know it's filthy. |

So I was having issues getting my key in the door locks on both sides. I wasn't sure what it was because the key wouldn't even go half way in. Today, with nowhere to go due to lack of motor I figured I'd have a look.
I pulled everything apart and it was all pretty dirty. Anyway the reason the key didn't fit aside from the excess dirt was that the key was cut incorrectly/
I filed the key down just a hair at a time in the spots that it was too high while testing it in the ignition lock every here and there. I finally got it to where it fit through the pins with no problem and still unlocked the ignition lock too. I also took some time to clean up the cylinders.
So of course the next problem, it seems that the ignition lock had been changed but the door locks hadn't. This kinda bugged me so I sat and pondered over a sandwich. Anyway I filed the pins down as much as I needed with the key in so I could technically re-key them and my door locks would work. Probably not the right way to do things, but it was easy, free and fixed the problem so I figure there's nothing wrong with it.
rough marks
filing
fitting
installed and working
Anyway, not a big deal but it's a one key car now and I can actually lock the doors. |
