Does this look ok? It looks like 0.003", but if I push and pull the flywheel harder, it will extend to about 0.005". I didn't think I was losing my mind. This is correct isn't it?
This is a new case, new flywheel std/std crank and std thrust. No o-ring. Distributor and pinion are in place; pulley is not. 370 ft. lbs. on new chromoly glandnut -- tightened with torque multiplier and my homemade welded 38mm adapter thingy. Dial indicator is on the flywheel with the plunger on the case with the flywheel lock in place. Is that enough details?

Great detail. One of the thrust washers may be bowed a bit. |

Looks fine to me, shimstack is probably just compressing a little more. I wouldn't worry about it. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

Ok sounds good. I should add that the shims are new. Will they wear in a bit? |

Depending on how hard your pushing/pulling,you might be seeing a little flywheel deflection too.If you're not sure,go for .004" with thumb effort,on new shims:the minimum clearance is a critical value. |

I'd say I'm pushing kind of hard to get that extra deflection. If I grab the flywheel right where I have the mic, yeah, it moves way more than 0.005". If I just push and pull normally, I've got 0.003". The plunger is at 12 o'clock and my hands are at 3 and 9. Does that make sense? |

Yes, it does.Flywheel deflection can be confused with warped shims easily enough.I say an "honest" .003 is fine. |

Get a helper and have them push on the front of the crank. |
