i thought i would share with everyone
the restoration i did on a stool
i picked up the stool a few weeks ago & it was destined to a landfill
a few days later i aquired the side of a sink cabinet,
some before pics ......
this is the side being replaced
now that you have seen the before pics lets get to work
if you have a 76-79 westy you should be able to reconize this piece
its the side of the sink cab
lets remove all bolts & hardware
now lets do the sacrifice dance & start cutting
now we use the wood that was removed from stool
& use it as a templete & with a router cut the new piece
bob villa style

Link
here is a close up of both new & original piece
after everything was put back together
the bare wood was clear coated & the rest of the laminate
was givin a good scrubbing
the cuchin & plaid were replaced & here are the
final results
drum roll please
this was the part replaced
you cant really tell from these pics but the stool had no bottom
i used a different piece of sink cab wood to cut a replacment
using the same era vintage wood to get a perfect match
i do have many more pics if you guys want to see them
just let me know & ill post some more pics
i have not tried to remove the wood face from the drawer
on the sink cab
if your in the area & you can remove it
i have some leftover pieces of wood w/lam
bring by we'll use it as a templete & ill make you a new one
& ill post the process here
if anyone wants/needs repairs in southern ca
maybe i can help im just a pm away |

Nice work & great write-up!
I love to see stuff being saved or reused like this. Especially when you're trying to keep it original, this stuff is getting harder and harder to find . . .
Our bus was built around this same principal, except I didn't have any original Westy stuff to start with - Our's was a 7-seat transporter. We hand-built the entire camper interior from scraps and free stuff. We've got less than $200 into the interior, and that's with running water, stove, microwave, cooler, lights, batt.charger, power inverter, & porta-potti! It pays off bigtime to "re-construct". Whole lot of satisfaction, too

Hey Klauss,
Did you draw plans before building that? I'm thinking of re-building mine now that I have built up better cabinetry skills. _________________ No boom today. Boom tomorrow. There's always a boom tomorrow. |

Nice job! Question for you, why replace the piece of wood? It appears that all you had to do was remove the old laminate and put new laminate back on. _________________ "I reject your reality and replace it with my own"

Hey, what are those straps on the front for--what do they hold? I've got the stool, and found the straps in a zip-lock bag in the bus, but didn't know where they went. |

DurocShark,
Had about 10 different versions drawn on graph paper, then mocked it up in the bus using cardboard. Just did what felt right to us . . .
The kitchen unit is sized for the pcs in it - cooler, microwave, etc

I think the key words there are ""...put new laminate back on..." New laminate is hard to find. Impossible, for me.
Nice job on the stool refurb, mate! Is the upholstery new, or just did it just clean up really nicely? _________________ John

As I recall, the old Formica Colonial Cherry, now discontinued, was the best match.
But I guess it pays to check them out from time to time. They have some new ones there that might work... I'm going to order some samples. Thanks for the tip.
Edit: I'm thinking that this 758 Blossom Cherrywood might be good:

its much easier & faster to replace the
wood & lam
than to carefully strip lam without chipping or warping it
then attempt to reglue & expect a high quality smooth finsh
it will only take 15 min to use a old door as a templete
& route a new door out of a cabinete side, drill holes & swap hardware
the lam on new door will already be well glued
it would take hours to carefully strip lam from both pieces
then reglue, route the lam & hope it does not come apart |

They attach to two small "bars" (same as found in your luggage rack) between the driver and passenger seats. It is to keep the box from moving whilst driving. Personally, I don't like the box there when I drive...however, I have put a pillow on the top to make myself an armrest. _________________ Fear is the mind killer.

Recently performed my own version of a Westy Stool Restoraton including a fabric change.
Does anyone have a nice close-up picture of the location and orientation of the mounting brackets for the stool? I searched the gallery but came up empty. Thanks in advance! _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

Thanks BusterBrown for the effort. pkrboo is correct.
I'm looking for detail on where the brackets for the straps mount onto the seat pedestals.
Sorry for the confusion and thanks again! _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

Not the best pic, but it gives you an idea of the location for the brackets. Can take measurements this evening if necessary.
