Go see Painted Gorge before it gets to hot. It's by Ocotillo Ca. Go out Interstate 8 and turn to old 8 at Ocotillo.

Lots of nice places near Miramar to camp, but none are free. Dos Picos up near Ramona is very nice.

I'm sure there are a few places in the Laguna Mts, but I don't know where they are.

Since it looks like your military, there is camping near the beach at Camp Pendleton. Don't know if it's free or not, you'd have to check with base MWR.

There's plenty of FREE spots all over the Anza Borrego desert. However, as such, they are "pack it in, pack it out" spots. Meaning you must make sure you leave them at least as clean as you found them. No facilities either so bring a portapotty too. The county parks are good, with facilities, near everything you'd want to do in the desert, but have also become too popular and thus get full often. So you'll have to plan ahead and reserve early. The link Fish posted is very good as it shows what's available as well as what taken for any particular date you're looking for. Good luck and thank you for your service to our Nation!
