Sears made a deal with B. F. Meyers & Co. to sell the Meyers Manx but backed out at the last minute to undercut Meyers and sell "Rascal" manx clones. However Sears went ahead and used pictures of the Meyers Manx(with Bruce and his then wife Shirley) in the Sears catalog. |

There are actually version of the same catalog with the Terra Buggy dune buggy in it. I also have found that Sears was selling the Terra Buggy kits BEFORE the Sears deal went together and then quickly fell apart.
Sears advertisied the Terra Buggy made kits as early as 1968.
The 1970 catalog buggy was a Manx2 even though I think that photo was a Manx1. I have only found 2 people who actually purchased and took delivery of an actual Manx through Sears.
Very interesting part of the buggy history.
Bart Shoemaker has done a ton of Rascal (Terra Buggy) research.
Good find!

Even B.F. Meyers reused stock pictures of Manx1s in magazine advertisments for the Manx2. I guess money was getting tight. |

My Rascal, under construction. I believe it is the "late tail box variety, probably 1971. Giveaway is the unusual dashboard configuration. |

The sears Rascals were featured in the August 1969 Popular Science.
From the article:
"Sears says that after the chassis is cut down, it should take you 80 to 100 hours to assemble the components into a finished dune buggy, provided you've had some previous experience in rebuilding cars." _________________ BuggyMeister.com

With a finished body, that is most likely a real close estimate. Once I finished my body, built the engine, built the trans, shortened the chassis, about 100 hours of work is about right for mine. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

JoeCool, you crack me up. My version of your statement would be "after all the hard work was done, I put another 100 hours into it." |

I can eat up a 100 hours in just 'looking at it' time, figuring out what I'm going to do next.
Wythac, did you make those side bars or did you purchase them from someone? They are very simlar to what I'm wanting to make. |

Made 'em. Poke around in the kit car gallery using my login name and you'll see a few better pictures. They are attached to the lift kit.

The Funfest crew of 14 did it less than 20 hours of work!
That was amazing!
Me alone I had spent 5 year looking at. _________________ 1958 Boss Bug "Coke Buggy"

14 helpers X 20 hours per helper = 280 hours. That is more than what Sears states, but your buggy is a lot more than stock with the brakes, Toms interior and a more custom dash. And a lot better looking than the Sears unit of 1970.
Wish I could have been the 15th helper. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

I could write a book on the Sears Rascal alone.
Sears used several suppliers, BF Meyers was one. Terra Buggy was the biggest supplier but had a hard time with demand, the tail was changed most likely due to water getting in the carburetor.
I have seen a pickup version of the Rascal with the Sears sticker - that was never advertised !
Spatz supplied bodies, but I have no idea what they would have looked like
I have also seen the Berry T in a Sears catalog
In the Popular Science and Dune buggies Magazine articles the body was coined ''Rascal'' - but never - anywhere - ever - did Sears ever use the word in their advertising, Sears always referred to it as ''the go anywhere buggy'' a bit of trivia !

Keep in mind the Popular Science article is nearly 40 years old.
Here is another snippet from the PS article:
"The basic vehicle can be built for as little as $1000, or for as much as a few thousand dollars, if you want to install all the deluxe options, an investment of $1500 in parts will give you a vehicle worth about $2500 completely assembled." _________________ BuggyMeister.com

This looks a lot like mine. I haven't been able to pinpoint my manufacturer yet. Even with Dune Buggy Archives. Does this on have a raised rib on the hood or a battery box in the right rear? _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

Here is a shot from the rear showing the dash and battery box area.
