I even replaced the thermostat housing cover. I an done throwing parts at this thing. The problem srarted after I replace the t-stat. I thought it might be bad out of the box so I bought a new one and it mad no difference. Any ideas? PLEASE HELP |

You say the problem started right after you replaced the t-stat, correct? And that's all you did, correct? Why did you replace the thermostat in the first place?
In any event, if I had to guess, I'd say maybe you're not bled properly. _________________ 1986 Westy 2WD auto a.k.a. "The Old Girl"

You are going to think this is funny but, it was running cold. I was getting no heat and it would not get out of the thick white slash on my gauge. |

If you are not getting heat from your heat vent it's not from your engine running cold it's from having air in the system.
If your temp gauge sensor is in a air pocket it won't read also.

Is the return hose from the radiator cold?
I hate to ask, is the thermostat in upside down? _________________ --------------------------------------------------------

Are you sure it is actually overheating or is it just a gauge malfunction? Buy or borrow an infrared meter and check to see what your engine temps actually are. |

I have a temp gun. I looked at it quick and was getting 90c on the big rubber hoses next to the t-stat and 105c at the heads. I will look at real good when I get home. |

I have talked with some local dudes and they think it is air in the system. I have bled the system 5 times with front end up almost a foot. If there is air in there I would be shocked. |

I have had better luck raising the rear high enough to have the fill cap higher than the bleeder screw on the radiator.
Then crack open the bleeder on the rear heater till coolant comes out.
Then crack the radiator bleed screw to do the same. _________________ --------------------------------------------------------

What is the temperature of the tanks on the radiator? Measure the top and bottom of the right hand tank as well as the left the left tank. Do the check it both with the fan running and with it off. |

I am assuming your outside temperature is not 60°C or that your engine temperature is not 103°F. Not sure what is happening myself. It sure doesn't sound like you are getting much flow through the radiator. Surely others will chime in, but I would say to throw another thermostat at it. You do have the correct thermostat, installed the correct way. with the correct o-ring don't you?
Your new radiator doesn't have a mouse nest in it or something does it? |

Their better not be a mouse nest in it!!! I have put 2 t-stats in now. one 80c and one 87c. nothing changed. This was the best it has run. I think the cool weather helped. I might be wrong but I do not think you can put a t-stat in wrong. I put it in spring down. |

Affirmative; it can't be installed upside down.
There are some tstats that fit and have the right temp setting but the disc on the bottom of it is too big. The diference is fairly obvious when you have the right one in your hand. I had a wrong one and didn't know it until I compared it with another new one. The disc has to be the right size to seat right down into the bottom of the tstat chamber, to block off the hole in the bottom of the tapered well, which forces all the hot coolant coming right out of the frontside of both heads to flow to the radiator (flow in the crossover hose over the bellhousing reverses to left-to-right). If the disc is too big, the tstat opens OK but the disc doesn't block the bottom of the well as it should a good deal of hot coolant comes back into the cool side and the whole shebang runs hotter.
The correct disc diameter is about 33mm. The wrong one was 10mm larger. _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

With a 87°C thermostat you engine temperatures should be about that to a few degrees above, as should the top right tank on the radiator. |

From cold, how fast does the temp rise to mid point? (over red light).
When real hot, drop water on head, does it boil?
Did you replace the cluster temp sender (black one) at the same time you replace the T-stat?
Did you bleed at T-stat. Drive with bleed screw open.
Never open more than one bleeder at a time!

Which one? the return line (in front, front is front of van)?
You didn't answer about temp of the return line. The big hose in front of the T-Stat housing (not cover) is the return line.
Now check the return line from front (near rad) to middle (under van near fuel tank) and rear near T-stat, return line is the left one, drive side.
Re-bleed with rear end in the air. 2000rpm, open only one bleeder screw at a time. Began with rad. Blow both heater fan in hot position.
Last, put back the old cluster sender in T-stat housing.
You should NOT see any temp over 100c anywhere.
