I just got a 54 hardtop myself!!! The 56-57 decklid has a rectangular bracket were the spring attaches to while the pre '55 have a triangular type that accomodate the "Big Spring" type decklid spring...

Hope that helps! Very Happy

Rear fenders once removed will have indented slots in the metal lip that gets bolted up against the body the front should have metal tubes coming from the headlight buckets and attaching to the body (almost in the form of an L shape). Correct "early" front fenders will have a more pronounced bubbulous shape to them, very different than later fenders if compared to side to side. Hope that helps bud and welcome to the oval club!
