Drove the 70 (bus) tonight. Ran great all the way to dinner. Then when we left it sputtered, then died. Wouldnt restart. I thought it was out of gas, left, came back with gas. After three gallons, it fires right off, first time, everytime, but wont idle. Tried to drive it keeping my foot on the gas, went at first, but then started stalling, bucking, and backfiring. Foot down on the gas gets nothing. Pop pop fizz fizz, dies. Restarts, wont idle. Smells rich. Everything on the motor is new. Alternator, carb, distributor and all parts, fuel pump, everything. I think somethings wrong with the choke/carb. Took off the breather, and the flap in the carb is open all the time, not sure thats normal or not. Gonna work on it in the am, as its dark and I'm tired.

Fuel starvation, crap in the gas or flooding, hard to tell. Any black smoke? The backfires are more common with starvation. A look at the fuel filter and a flow and maybe even pressure test would be a good start. Next on my list would be a look in the carb for crap.
Edit: any vacuum hoses off? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Interesting you mention the vaccum hose, I noticed the hose running to my breather is broken. Would that do it? I can rev it up and it sputters, but if I try to drive, it wont go. Sometimes when I start it it revs up real high until I tap the gas. _________________ '73 Transporter - Driver

Check all ignition before messing too much with your carb. Is your dizzy pretty close to the right static timing. Also are the points set right? |

I beleive the Vacuum hose will do anything. Replace that joker and all suspicious ones or ALL OF THEM. _________________ "My shovel is sharp, my pick is sharp, and my will is outstanding." - Rod Marinelli
