So - that is what I need for our '46 but in the meantime I have what has been described above as a 'cog-cap' i.e. the one with the grips around the outside for sale in excellent condition.

Anyone interested please give me a call.

I believe the early cap belongs to this tank, no space for strainer:

I believe that the tank on our '46 had that reducer plate originally but it had been removed before we bought the car. There was evidence of the welds that had held it in place.

Rod - This could be your lucky day! This petrol cap I've had hanging around for 40 years. Now blasted & primed, available at the special 'Samba price', of only $1,500! OK, a little less for yourself....

Ha Ha JH - Martin and I know one another better than that! We've been in this same Volkswagen game together in the UK for almost fifty years.

OK - As you put it that way, you can have it as a gift! I'll be glad to see it going to a good home, having stared at it in the garage for years. This hobby wasn't always totally about money, and over the years I've been the recipient of parts freely given, and also given to others, particularly those I know who are keeping their cars, and not purely selling on for profit.

Thanks Martin, as always a gentleman.

I have a 47 and used the cap with the small center hole. The downside is that gas actually comes out of the hole when your driving. So i switched back to the smooth cap with no hole, keeping the small hole cap since it's correct for my car.

OK - The tank cap has now arrived from Martin - thank you Martin.

Now the question. What colour should it be painted?

The car is a November 1946 and body colour is black (as on the VW Zertifikat) but the pan was originally green so remains so as is the fuel tank. We are sure of the green pan as that colour was found inside the centre backbone during restoration.
