It's been fun reading all your comments so far - positive and negative. It is a piece of %*&($# , but I'll work on it this summer - welding mostly - and we'll see where it goes. Here's the worst of it.....
I'll post my metals needs soon, but you can pretty much see here what I'm up against. _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

Love it man, the tailgate is AWESOME.
I wouldnt do it to one today, but if I found one like it, I'd definately try to snatch it up.
Hope to see this evolve into a driver!! _________________ • Metal Fab & Quality Suspensions, Type I-II-III. Since 2004 • |

Hey DC... how did you end up getting the doors open? I went about a year ago to look at that thing right before the other dude 'bought' it. The doors were impossibly stuck shut so I couldnt get inside to see the rear window and floors, etc. It was most definately as cool as a hack job could ever be. I wanted that truck sooo bad. Godsbug was even gonna help me get IIRC... Good luck with it and please keep us posted. I would love to see it on the road again.
BTW, the guy you bought it from is pretty cool, huh? I loved seeing his collection of VWs in his yard.. _________________ Jim in Sacto -

It was fun to see all the other cars on that property - nice people for sure. I had been out to see the truck before as well and also was bummed about not being able to open the doors. I still was not able to open them before I got it home, but I knew the floors were toast.
Here's how I was finally able to get the doors open: I crawled under the car, reached all the way up through the hole in the pan and rolled down the driver's side window - crawled in through the open window (still wasn't opening-even grabbing the window sill ) . Kicked open the door (made sure it was unlocked).
Didn't hurt anything! Three-Bolt hinges are fine - lubed them up - latches work OK - a little mis-adjusted but they open and close, etc. Passenger side was the same - needed a swift kick!
Found registration papers going back to Ketron Island (in the Puget Sound) in 1975. It has a special Title-VIN number, dating back that far that calls it a "TRK" in the model listing spot _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

This pickup is for sale here too. There is another nice one on the road here with quarter windows behind the doors and big flares over the rear wheels!

Thanks to all who have stepped up and offered parts for this project I'm super impressed wuth the Samba t-3 community. My head is spinning a bit here trying to decide the best combination of offers and parts to get started.
I'm not real excited about having an entire parts car on my property - storage is a bit of an issue - but buying each part separately is more expensive.
The pan is the toughest issue shipping-wise.
Hmmm.... I'll have to sleep on it. I'll let you know soon what I decide to soon - especially those that have offered parts and prices.
Thanks _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

The dished cowl vents are through the first half of '67. Get ahold of Les Troyer for the cowl vents. He might still have them from my old '67 square that I gave him last fall. You can track him don via the Type 3 Tuedays in seattle thread..... _________________ Jim in Sacto -

My truck won't need a title to match the pan when the time comes to swap it out - it's titled to the body with a special assigned number from the State of Washington. I just got the papers in order today. When the time comes to swap out the pan - that will give me options Thanks to Kris, I've got cowl metal on the way - I've also started working on the fenders (easy patch and prep. for paint) I don't have the space for lots of parts at once, so I'll be tackling it job by job - also give me the "bail-out" option if I get discouraged or burnt out on this substantial job! _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

Worked on the lower driver's side fender today - had a rusted out hole - otherwise a nice early euro fender. Figured out that there's an inner and outer piece of metal. Made two paper templates - cut out steel from those - and welded them in Folded the outer skin carefully over the edge and around to cover the inner/back piece of metal.
Some sloppy welds on the back side (hard to weld rust ) but it was decent enough to work - the front side was much cleaner -
Hoo-ray Feels like the resto is officially underway - at this rate I'll be done in about 20 years
A cowl - air intake metal replacement - along with the other front fender is coming up soon... _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |
