Aren’t the cups and seals the same on ‘64-‘65 cylinders? I know the shape and layout of the cylinder itself varies from year to year, but I was under the impression that the parts that need replacing are pretty universal... like, even the 7/8” stuff from the FLAPS would work?
Anyway, I will drive it around again and check very carefully for leaks- didn’t see any on a short drive yesterday. Maybe it won’t be leaking and it was just the mess from moving the hoses and bleeders that was showing up? Not likely🙄🙄
I will pull the drums and see where it is leaking and go from there.
Can I get instructions/advice on how to use brake paste and/or assembly lube? _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

After sitting for a couple of days, the passenger side front brakes are leaking just sitting there parked. The drivers side is dry but I haven't tested it under pressure again.
Feeling sort of dumb, but is it possible that I just need to reassemble the wheel cylinders with BRAKE PASTE (like ATE or equivalent)? Maybe new fresh seals and cups? Did anyone wanna confirm that any 22mm or 7/8" cups/seals should work?
I did test all this stuff dry The wheel cylinders expand and contract nicely... just have some leaks.
Not sure all FOUR fronts are leaking, but I will find out _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

OK- Took a longer test drive all around the neighborhood - slight leaks.
Back home - put the front end up on jack stands, pulled the drums - NO Leaky Wheel Cylinders! No leaky pipes! No leaking soft hoses! Turns out my mechanix had used paste when they re-did my work last week- so that's good! Grateful I don't have to pull the wheel cylinders and rebuild them.
HOWEVER --- Both sides had leaking Bleeders! Boo
So I replaced the passenger side bleeder with an extra new one that I had ...
Bleed the system again...went for another drive.
Pedal is STILL not great...
Will check for leaks again later... any advice on troublesome bleeder valves/screws? _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

I bought a power bleeder for my brakes when I had drums - all it took was 10psi to get them clear and functional. I've tried to gravity bleed them and wasn't able to get a good pedal...closest I got was using one way bleeders.
Pretty sure this is the one I bought four years ago - still use it and it takes ~30 minutes to bleed the brakes at all four corners.
https://www.amazon.com/Motive-Products-European-Bleeder-Adapter/dp/B0002KM5L0
I don't use the rubber gasket in the adapter cap - it just leaked everywhere. |

Cool !
What about those "Speed-Bleeders" ? One man AND a built-in little check valve!
http://store-speedbleeder-com.3dcartstores.com/
AND/OR
I think the problem could be this:
New in the middle - old ones on the outside- These suckers seal wear the tapered seat is up against the slave/cylinder bore, right? The profile is not quite right on the new and the threads are longer....
I'm wondering now if it wasn't a fluke that the left-side bleeder took a 11mm wrench to close and the right-side bleeder took a 10mm. Gotta hunt through the parts again... _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

Got it!
NO Leaks finally...
It was indeed the wrong bleeder valves - the tapered seal was not quite right- Gary hooked me up and it's all good now.
Now, I will lower it in the front and rear - it rides nice but sits a little high and it needs an alignment...
Also - I want to rebuild my old core wheels cylinders to have for the future
I got a honing tool.
Questions!
What can I do to clean off all the rust and restore these? Vinegar? Or?
Can the '64-'65 rebuild kits (which are also 22mm) be used? _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

That will work. Vinegar will also work, although more slowly. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

Your front bumper brackets need to be flipped side to side. It causes that tilt down and not level. _________________

Not the issue - tried that a long time ago - it was so much worse that it wouldn't mount without hitting the fender...
The bumper itself is just messed up. The rear was the same at one point and last time it was off, I figured out how to fix it... I may buy a nice one from Joel OR
I also have a secret plan for the front but I'm not sure when/if I will execute _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

I was working on a house in Bremerton and this car passed by. I ran down the driveway like a kid chasing an ice cream truck but it was gone. Looked great, glad I found the build for such a unique, local car. |

Definitely came along way since then. And there's the proof I saw it in person, as Sue and myself are in the background of the 1st pic.
