Minor Update:
Finally saved up enough to pave my driveway from the backyard fence all the way to the street! No more working on gravel. I'm still prepping the site - all those bushes are gone now as well as the temp garage...
While digging and cleaning - I uncovered the old chassis - Any one want it before it goes to the junkyard? FREE FREE FREE

Pretty excited about my NEW paved driveway
Lived here since 2002 - Started the Type 3 Truck in 2009 - basically rebuilt the whole thing in the gravel and dirt...
No garage or carport and I still have work to do on the landscaping BUT WOW-
Love it

Heck yeah it feels good We just finished a front back redo. We needed turf to kill out the Golfers. Yep I said Golfers. Plus a cement pad in the back for the VWs and new sod with a hidden path to the rear car port.

The driveway looks good dc. Plus it'll give you a nice flat smooth place to work on stuff.
It also changed how everything looked when compare to the before pic. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Ready for nice weather It's still pretty cold at night but it's moving towards spring.
The bed cover experienced some water damage over the winter Gonna have to work on it.... maybe a slight re-design.
So... I put the hoop, bows and canvas back on in the meantime and I'm double-tarping it until I can get a carport built - hopefully this spring or summer

Remember my front bumper re-do?
I'm gathering parts and thinking about the back bumper now
That's a Volvo Amazon/122 rear bumper...the match to the front...guards are bad and the ends still need polishing
Also MIGHT re-design/smooth out the design of the tail-gate. I'm gonna cut up that orange hatch and save the original 'gate to keep options open! Also- I'll need to relocate that tail-pipe or flip the whole exhaust. _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

Dude , I just have to say... I love your "truck". its badass. if I didn't already have an el camino I would be looking at snapping up one of the already done derelicts around the country. love all the custom little tricks you've done with it and its always a joy to see what your doing next. keep it up brother! _________________ Schnell, SCHNELL!

Time for the update on my Read End Re-Design
I was able to gather all the needed parts thanks to the wonders of the internet and fellow VW fans.
Took a 70's vintage hatch and cut it apart to make a new SMOOOOOTH tail-gate! Some rust to patch - some holes to fill - and one big 20 gauge sheet where the license plate used to live -
Old hatch (safe in storage now )
VERSUS
New hatch
On to the REAR bumper - I wanted something thicker - that visually LOWERS the car and can host the newly re-located license plate.
It's a customized/trimmed Volvo Amazon (mid-1960s) AND a real '49 Chevy front plate holder...
MOCK -Up
It ain't a perfect fit and the chrome is pretty sad condition-wise - plus I'm missing the guards (I have non restorable terrible ones)
BUT
I think it fits pretty damn nice Thanks to the old school So Cal customizers for the ideas....
Here's how far I got -
Gotta address fitment issues still - more welding and body work needed but you get the idea.... _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

That sure changes how it looks from behind. Can't wait to see the finished product. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thanks guys!
After I get the 'gate painted -
I feel like it needs a few things to pull off the overall changes-
-Flat Tail-Lights - should match the tailgate and bumper angles better
-Lower the rear suspension a few inches
-Replace the too-big muffler - ideas? I don't really want to replace the extractor just the muffler _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

I bought a short turbo muffler and built my own. About $45 total, with hitemp paint.

Here we go - with some quick bondo and black spray paint- needs more work to be straight but it fits and looks OK
