Here's some pictures from the Classic yesterday - fun times!
Headed home on the ferry Chimacum
I'm looking for a SUBTLE Volkswagen and/or trim idea for the tail-gate -
Maybe like this:
Imagine the V O L K S W A G E N all the way across the body line - sort of like a "NAVIGATOR" - a clean, Sans Serif font in 2" Aluminum

Looks like a nice day for a show.
For something "subtle" I would think like a simple "VW" emblem like what on the front of the hood in the center with some kind of small chrome handle/lip under it for the gate. Or just a script emblem spelling out "Volkswagen". Script has a classy look to it.
I do agree with Ev about the rabbit gate. It's actually something I've thought about on my square as well. I even have the section hanging in my garage. Just not something I've gotten around to doing. _________________ 1971 Squareback, fully bagged, 1776.

The type 4 front nose emblem - "vw" with trim on either side might be cool...
I also like the Canadian style front Bug emblem script - maybe combined with a Cadillac/Chevy style "V" - kinda flashy though...
IMHO - The big Rabbit pickup style VOLKSWAGEN is just too big and 80's for this truck- not the look I'm going for _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

Meanwhile-
Filled (welded shut) the trim holes on the front edge of the hood:
I would love to fill/smooth the stock license plate holder on the front apron but I am not super confident in my abilities The tail-gate project reminded me just how difficult good, smooth body work can be! _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

Your truck looks really nice. You've come along way with it to be slightly intimidated by that little spot you could knock out in a weekend. You should go for it, take your time and you'll be happy you did rather than stare at it and wish. I believe you've done harder things on this car than that. Keep at it. This truck screams coolness Great job all around! _________________ MonT3

As long as you're not in a hurry, or need the truck, you should be able to do it. I've seen a lot of your other repair work, and that hump shouldn't be a problem for you. Since you're probably still working outside in the driveway, you need to do it when it's not raining. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thanks for the encouragement - I'm trying to wrap my head around the curves involved on that spot - it would be easier if I had a scrap like an apron piece that would a donor- but I can probably make that shape with some careful bending and shaping... _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

After MUCH searching - found these old cast aluminum letters- same size and NEARLY the same font as the "S" in the 1500 S badging...
These will go on the tailgate _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

Not sure what they are from - no pins for mounting- likely just old mailbox or business signage. They are nice cast aluminum - I have since polished and clearcoated them. _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

Drove the car down to Gig Harbor today for a big, all-makes car show. Pretty fun show and talked with some cool people Walked around with the Pentax Spotmatic and the Rolleiflex (but also shot a few with the iPhone).
While I was at the show, I talked with Don, a previous owner of the truck. I had meet him once before when I was researching the history of the vehicle BUT today he had a picture to share with me
This was EARLY 1980's - already looks pretty rough in the photo, but it was still a driver at that time. By the time I got it in 2009, it was worse and missing parts. Very fun to have a vintage shot of the truck - really the high-light of the day
Yesterday, before the show, I messed around with bumper guards and decided I don't like them on there (at least for now). Nothing fits very well- even the stock Volvo guards I managed to find - so back to clean and guard-less for now.
Oh hey!
Look at those FLAT tail-lights.... thanks Joel !
Here's the truck at the show earlier today....
Tony's 21-window got a lot of deserved attention!
On the way home (25 miles) one of my push-rod tube seals cracked open and leaked some oil - nothing too serious just wet oil underneath.
Those collapsible tubes have been leaky ever since the motor was re-built -
gotta replace 'em....
Otherwise - the truck ran great - 60mph no problem _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

Careful measuring and lay-out. I used 3M emblem adhesive - not really a fan- messy and tough to apply. I should have used the transfer tape/ adhesive style stuff
Anyway, the "K" and the "W" are a bit goopy/messy.
And a "dramatic" night shot...

That night shot looks great. If you had located them up a little higher on the gate, you could see the lettering better in the day light.
Congrats on getting the old pic of your truck. A little history is always nice. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thanks Bob!
I guess I went with that spot cuz it matches the belt line trim and sits right on the tail-gate character line🤷🏻♂️.
Next up is some horn work... I presently have no horns 😬 _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

Well- It's been quite a while since updates... I found a really cool pair of horns at Ballard Reuse but haven't installed them. I have been VERY distracted by a new VW project in driveway: a '63 Ghia that I picked up in mid-November
Meanwhile, here's some "artsy" shots of the Truck using my Rolleiflex Grey Baby and a Toko (topcon) Primo Jr film camera. These cameras are great! They use 127 size film - the old "Super Slide" format; bigger than 35mm but smaller than medium format. The advantage is compact cameras with better quality/resolution than 35mm. The disadvantage is very difficult to find film and costly processing.
The plan all along has been to get a work flow sorted out to shoot this format to document the Type 3 Invasion experience and I have it all dialed in now- two good cameras, a healthy stash of film, and a lab with excellent processing and scanning.
The question marks now is this pandemic we are living through...strange and stressful times Living in the Pacific NW - the original epicenter of the US infection has been pretty surreal!
