I think the practice varied over the years.
At many times, spare material was used, which may or may not match the car's interior. It was a crapshoot, "pull from the scrap bin" kind of selection.
My '71 Fastback used a grey material that did not appear anywhere in the car, and was probably sourced specifically for tool rolls. |
The grey pouches seem to be the most common. _________________ Marc

IMHO, this tool kit is far more rare than my 66/67 Hazet kit. It’s obviously not as desirable as the spare tire kit but I’ve never seen another. Next question is… which car gets what kit?

The box shown is actually one of the early versions. This is what the cans looked like in the 50's. The picture is from a 1956 BERATER magazine. Later they had the same pattern as the spare parts boxes, and plastic sealing lids. By the way, the Konervierungsmittel was a wax emulsion, so it was a kind of liquid wax. |

Can someone tell me the dimensions of the tool roll pliers (lenght, width).
I have two different sizes (one lenght 16 cm, another 18 cm). Which one is correct? _________________ 1962 type 117 (black beetle sunroof)

This is the pliers from my early '66 (August '65) Tourist Delivery Beetle.

ya i THINK those pliers are 165 mm long ...........
now i just found this wrench advertised in the samba classifieds today n bought it
i think its a pretty hard roll up tool kit wrench to find ? first one i have ever seen available .
its a Hazet 10 by 14 mm . the owners manuals shows it for both 1951 Bug and Bus but by 1952 it was 8 by 12 mm

Fan belt! Probably. ^Can see the impression outline.
My bag:
From the gallery:
Was the bus jack bag the same size as the split beetle jack bag (roughly 23cm by 47cm)?
Or bigger, as the Jack is bigger?
Update: Yes, taller, but thinner. But probably only used from 1966/7
Roughly 16.5cm by 69cm

Next question. Early to mid-50s tool rolls…5-pocket
Does anyone know the correct pocket positions of each tool?
Any original period tool roll pictures out there?
ie Which tool/s go in the widest of those 5 pockets?
(4 of the pockets are pretty much equal size)
What went in the single pocket at the top?
Or was it all just totally RANDOM _________________ -StockRocks-

so i went n found my jack bag . i believe its for a split bug ? i didnt know about keeping a fan belt in there , so today i put my spare split belt in there . bag measured 19 by 9 inches . i dont have a split bug jack yet , not easy to find and usually out of my reach when i find one i have a similar green canvas split bug 5 pocket tool roll coming in the mail that i think matches this fabric . ill post it when it gets here . i also have a bug hand crank starting lever . the trunk is almost full with all this stuff already LOL
wile i dont have a split jack this early next generation jack kinda fits in the bag too .
id kinda like something to keep the hand crank in now , stitch up a bag somehow ?

if one were to hazard a guess . . . . . wonder if the pipe upright on the jack would be, uh, say, maybe about 1 1/4 " in diameter outside?
then, knowing 3 dimensions, someone could construct a very plausible scale model.
whattaya think? |

Someone asked in another thread when the 8/13mm small wrench was first used.
I'm posting what I found here for reference.

I checked some Beetle owner's manuals on the site.
January, 1962 lists an 8/12mm wrench
August, 1962 lists an 8/13mm wrench
So it looks like that was changed for the 1963 models (August, 1962) |

here are two more kits i have been working on . both 5 pockets one side 1 on the other . not all the same tools they came with as some rusty beyond a clean up . but swapped with similar ones . the bars are repo but everything else original .
the fabric in the first one looks to be a perfect match with one a couple posts earlier from member Rockstock .
sparkplug socket is clip is RIVETED in here .
this one has snap in CLIPS in the sparkplug socket . green canvas .
