What brand of pliers would have been used in a 71 bug kit. How long were they? |
There are no brand markings on the pliers.
The total length when closed is approx. 6 3/8"
Example of a '69 tool kit form the Gallery, it should be the same:

This is a little OCD on my part but I am in the process of making sure I had all the right tools for my 63 Bug, 65 Bus, and 67 Bus toolkits and got stuck on the spark plug tools. I mistakingly mixed 2 reproduction tools (from the popular $45 kits that WW sell) with some originals and need some help identifying which is which.
On the left of the picture, the 4 generic mid 60's plug/lug sockets look the same but 2 of them have rubber grommets in the spark plugs, and are 143mm long (instead of 140mm) and bizarrely a Bug lug nut fits much nicer in these 'grommet' versions. They all weigh the same at 214g. Which is which?
Finally, could someone ID the other two sockets, particularly the longest one as this looks early (well made) - type 3 maybe?
The oddball socket on the right is headed for the trash can unless someone knows where its from - neither end is 19mm lug nut.

When was the blue rolled Stahlwille kit offered as an accessory by VW? Any brochure illustrating it? _________________ 1971 1302LS Convertible (RHD) owned since '74

just sharing a few of my kits , for the most part i had to piece em together , the black one was the most complete ...... i consider these early bug kits . for me its hard putting dates on em , some of the canvas covers have more or less pockets and different sizes .......got some good but conflicting info about the spark plug sockets with the clips , one post says the clip in clips came first another says the riveted in clips came first ??? i think i read 54 was the last with the clips ..... im trying to make one kit for a 51 and another for a 53 here . these kits all look complete to me but should acompany the jack with the handle

I think both 51 and 53 should have the riveted spark plug tool?
There are 2 people on there with original 51 kits and they both have riveted tools.
My '54 Single cab original tool kit in this thread is riveted too.
I think the clips one without rivets is slightly later... 55-56 or 55-?? _________________ How to Post Photos

Were red tool rolls common? I know of a Swedish delivery 1970 Karmann Ghia Cabriolet that has beautiful red vinyl seats and door panels and I wonder if this is the same vinyl?
This tool roll came with my 1968 Karmann Ghia convertible. It was built approximately April of 1968. The car has only 22,350 miles and it is still mostly all original including the paint so I have no reason to suspect this is not the original tool roll. It even still has a continental belt marked "VW". The tools were rusted and the vinyl was dirty but it all cleaned up nicely. The vinyl has no cracks on it and the thread seems fine. All except the pliers and the screwdriver handle were soaked in vinegar for about 2 weeks. The tommy bar is as it arrived in the jack so it looks like original paint?

Original from my 66 sedan. All aged. The roll cleaned up with Woolite and patience. Missing the puller. If anyone has one to sell… 👍😀 _________________ 1966 Volkswagen Sedan 1300 (now 1641), 6 volt, L456 Ruby Red, Platinum leatherette. |

Red seems less common from what I have seen but Yes:
It's probably the same material since they used left-over seat material quite frequently. _________________ How to Post Photos

I think the practice varied over the years.
At many times, spare material was used, which may or may not match the car's interior. It was a crapshoot, "pull from the scrap bin" kind of selection.
My '71 Fastback used a grey material that did not appear anywhere in the car, and was probably sourced specifically for tool rolls. |
