Here's a good friend's of mine hightop with a kayak on top taking turns at the annual Westies @ Watkins event in NY.
he's far from 6' tall and manages fine. this is a kayak, but he'd put blocks on the top to keep the canoe centered.

Why? It can still be done. |
I suppose I could, but the top drops down in the back into the luggage rack. I'd have to build something to support the canoe at the rear of the Bus and carry a bulky step stool inside. I'd more than likely be putting it up and taking it down by myself. I'm 6' 5" and still think it would be too much of a PITA. If I want it bad enough though, I'll make it happen. |

Alright, alright...I'll do it!
My plan lives on.

I like the idea of a coupla truck inner tubes as a cushion for the canoe or kayak since they can be used as extra flotation devices. |

Whoa I love it.
I did some searching on the internet because I decided that I must have this immediately. A couple of questions:
1. What size extenders did you get for the foot pack? (I also have a AW top)
2. Where did you order from?
3. Does that front foot interfere with opening the door?

For my AW I needed the tallest extenders (60cm-77cm)... The ones I have can go taller then shown.
2. Where did you order from?
Unfortunately they are not available in North America and had to ask a friend to carry them over from the UK. I worked with PETER BOWMAN TOWBAR CENTRE TEL: 0161 797 3000 [email protected]. He'll ship it to you if you like...great to work with.
3. Does that front foot interfere with opening the door?
No...also, set up fits an AW top as if it was custom made for it. The vertical posts have just enough clearance from the top.
If you really want to throw stuff on top of an AW...this is the way to go
Hope this helps.....

At times i wish i could carry mine on the roof...... but in the meantime i built me a trailer to haul it on...
I have a 10" kayak that will fit inside with the rear hatch closed... and i have taken it that way several times...

if you have a smooth top bus (meaning not a Westy) some canoes like the coleman have heavy foam blocks that fit on the rails. On my 1971 I used to put the foam blocks on, flip it over, lift and set the front on the top, lift the back and slide the canoe forward then tie it down with trucker's knots with two ropes in the front in case one chaffed or broke. We drove many trips close to 1000 miles each in winds sometimes at 65 mph and never had any issues. Especially if you keep the top waxed to make it easy to slide the blocks, buses are perfectly designed to haul a canoe. We'd buy a new bay today as a second car and daily driver if they still made them because they are so functional. Today I could not leave my bus unattended while canoeing because of all the way things are. Buses are too rare. In fact on a 6500 mile trip we just made, we saw only one running bus the whole trip. |

You must mean non pop top buses. No problem with hard top Westies or other hard top campers.
Hope Jim (XXX/Rx/RnR) doesn't mind but I'm taking the liberty of posting a couple of his pics. He has a slick functional rig and with his struts/shocks he can easily raise the poptop with the canoe on top.
Caravaning with him on the way up to the high country.

Wow DB.....what a great pic!!! I miss living out west. Great thead. Until I can get my Westy trailer together it's great to hear real time experiences. With adding insult to injury with our aerodynamic nightmares I was concerned with speeds approaching 60. But by the sounds of it it's no big deal. |

This and the trailer thread are great! Having just gone canoing (helps clear the mind) I was wondering how I could make that work. Thanks for all the ideas! _________________ MAKE FORUMS GREAT AGAIN

I agree, so here is my bus with canoe, trailer, and bike rack. If you check my thread (in sig) youll see the making of a custom hitch, customized the bike rack with a ball and, of course, the custom built trailer.
