Posted: Fri May 22, 2009 4:04 pm Post subject: proper installation of engine lid spring |
|
|
My recent purchase of my 56 didnt include the w deck lid, so I purchased 1 repop from KSR, which is OK , my question is the proper placement of the spring? to the body, and to the lid itself.
the body recieves the "U" in the spring. correct? is there only 1 groove that it fits into?
And
The eng lid recieves the 2 bends in the spring, but there seems to be 2 different slots they fit into, is it the lower 1's or the 1's near the top?
and after you mount the spring do you then adjust the lid to the body?
any help would be great appreciated. |

Use the holes near the top edge of the decklid |

Not sure of the year of this one but it appears to be correct EXCEPT for the use of the incorrect holes on the decklid - rareair is correct, the two end points on the spring should be in the two holes closest to the edge of the decklid
And good luck with the install, it usually goes best with two people.

1 person can do it. Hook the body side first, then do the hood holes one at a time. At least the big spring works that way. _________________ CH³NO²

That's because the pic is showing the incorrect holes being used. Instal the spring in the holes closest to the edge of the decklid

The reason for the second set of holes is simply to make installation easier. Hook the spring in the "wrong" holes first, then progress to the correct set. |

There is an easier still way to do this.
1) install the spring in the decklid, in the hole set closest to the edge.
2) slip the one hinge up on the bracket, but tilting the decklid to that side, leave the spring hanging.
3) thread one of the M6 bolts into the hinge arm through the bracket, but don't tighten it all the way.
4) now pivot the decklid on that bolt, "feed" the spring tongue in to the slot in the bracket on the body as the decklid pivots into the straight across position. Push down on it compressing the spring, using that bolt as a pivot. Once it gets closer, feed the other hinge arm onto its bracket.
I cussed for YEARS until someone told me about that trick... _________________ John Henry

this is one of the best tips I've ever read on samba. I put my decklid on in a matter of minutes! _________________ 1973 Super Beetle

The reason there are two sets of holes is to make the little bracket the same on each end. That way when the bracket was to be installed in the factory, they can't ever install it backwards. Also, installing it is faster when you don't need to check it's orientation. _________________

according to the Bentley manual,
"the tension of a weak spring is increased by placing it in the lower slot" |
