Thanks to all who have posted to the Shalako thread!
I would like to ask how the Shalako (or similar street buggy type) handles on the road. I suspect it is a total BLAST to drive, but I was hoping for some comments from owners as to how much fun the car is (or not). I know this is highly affected by the suspension type and engine setup, but I am looking for any owner impressions, please.
Yessong, I have watched you vid a dozen times now, cool car Sir!!
Any any general comments on actually owning a Shalako would be greatly appreciated!
Information on the internet is scarce at best, so thanks again for all the posts to the Shalako thread... |

VW bug based short wheelbase buggies all have pretty similar handling characteristics. The ride and stability is totally dependent on how you set them up. If you don't do something to soften the stock front spring rate they're pretty hard and bouncy. If you don't have enough caster, they wander. If you have a swingarm rear suspension with too much camber, they'll roll over, etc., etc.
However, if you get everything dialed in right, they handle good to very good.
The one thing I've heard about the Shalako is, they are not designed for tall people. Also, a quality buggy body without doors on a VW chassis might actually make a more rigid structure than a Shalako with opening doors and so, handle better. A full cage, tied into the chassis will improve safety and handling but make things even more crowded. A tube chassis with an integrated cage is best.
Some enclosed body VW kit car builders actually lower the floor for more headroom. If you wanted the best possible handling Shalako, build a custom tube chassis, mount a Japanese transverse engine front wheel drivetrain mid-engine behind the seats. Go with an A-arm front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension like this.

Appreciate the feedback!
That Toyo setup in the link is sweet.
I am 5'10 so I am not too worried about room, in fact, I like the idea of a tight "go-cart" like fit.
Any tall passengers could remove their door, anyway
I would be looking for a tube chassis, as you mentioned.
Thanks again! |
