Was out to the countryside driving with the family a few weeks ago. While the wife was checking a small fleamarket I got the opportuity to take some nice photos..
Last weekend I replaced the worn out dual Solexes with the 66 own original 1300 single carb and now it runs way much better even though the engine is a 1680cc...

Not much have happened here the past years. Just been driving...
But this summer there is going to be some new mods. Tired of the lowered cars all over so I decided to "unlower" this one..
After some research and searching I found a set of Thing spindles in Denmark. I modded one pair of type-1 lower trailingarms so I could fit the Thing lower balljoint. With this mod I have a bolt-on 3" OEM liftkit for the front.
Also scored a 57-58 type-2 transmission from a friend of mine a few years ago. This had allready a type-1 adapterkit on it as it was sitting in a -51 beetle. He sold it all to me. I will now move the driveaxles and reductionboxes to a later transmission that will bolt-on to the -66.
I've now got 195/80R15 and wondering if I could go for stock 4x15's or if I need wider for those?

So, today I started to disassemble the donor -58 transmission with reductionboxes that I bought from a somewhat weird contraption. It was taken out of a splitbeetle that some genious had built to snowmobile ages ago... Yes.. you heard right..
Anyhow. All seem'd good so far. When I got the first redux open I got some confused... I found Gold?? Or bronze? Brass?
Seems like the upper drive is "homemade"... the ratio is 21teeth on lower and 12 on upper drive.
After some reading I found this here on the forums.
Took a closer look and I found that the lower short axle had been moved up the amount needed for the smaller upper drive. With new bearingsleeves etc...
Took apart the other side too. The upper drive on this side was steel but otherwise identical...
Well, took the splitcase apart and now next got to figure out what parts can be used on the -65 beetle transmission that I use for the raised transaxle combination..

Starting to get the parts together again.
Had to make two more of the seals for the axletube mounts to get the required three per side..
After this I could put the axletubes and reduxes on.
PO had cut of the lower shockmounts so I decided to make my own. Made a jig from the type-1 tubes so I get them correct for type-1 shocks.

While I'm a fan of stock height, I confess that this looks very good indeed. I like that far more than lowered cars. _________________ Gone but not forgotten: 1950 Hoffman split (restored in 1966) - another 1950 Hoffman split (restored in 1996) |

I like the look, but It may not be so fun to drive faster than 35 mph. _________________ Good Luck

Honestly now after 60km driven it surprised me how well it drives. Even on streets and highways! Not for one second concidering to lower it again after this mod. Nice to be different from the mainstream beetles at the carshows..
Lowest groundclearance below engine at 10 inches...
