so, while popping in my new radiator, i noticed a pool of fluid on the floor. i looked above it to discover a torn front passenger cv boot, dripping what appears to be oil of some kind.

clearly, i'll have to replace the boot (it's vw/audi, so i'm guessing it's 18 years old). but what is this fluid, and why is it leaking here? gear oil? i would hope it's not motor oil.

thanks,
james

Not sure how it's in the front, but at the rear there is a small plastic cap in the flange for the CV keeping gear oil from leaking out. One of mine had fallen out in the rear and filled the cv and boot with gear oil with leaked out and ran down along the gearbox. when i took the cv off it made quite a mess, had to be a few deciliters of oil in there Shocked .

thanks for the reply, alex. any idea on a part number? i don't know if it would be the same front and back (my knowledge of cv anatomy is limited), but it sure sounds like the same problem.

I reused the old one, it has held for about 1000 miles so far. I'm shure i have seen a pic of it in some e-store but i can't find it.
Its the small cap lying in the corner of this pic, in front of some of the oil that came out. The CV was still dripping after a week! It fits in the bottom og the cone in the flange.

Edit: Found another pic where you can see the green cap in the flange. this is the opposite side of the box.

cool, thanks. i'll do some dissecting and find out if that is indeed the culprit.

so, yeah. i was, of course, referring to the steering rack boot, rather than the cv boot. and i'm wondering if what's flowing out isn't gear oil, but power steering fluid. and what does that mean?

Put a NEW one and make sure the transmission breather is not blocked.
