Well, it kinda blows a little bit. But even on high, you can barely feel air flowing out of the vents.

All the vents work properly with the ram air when the bus is moving, so it would seem all the flaps and all are good.

Any suggestions on what to look for?

What year Vanagon are we talking about?

The blower isn't really meant to provide any air movement except for when the van is idle--and even then, it's marginal at best. At all other times (when the van is moving) the ram air effect is what is driving air through the vents--and you regulate the volume of air through the opening and closing of siding vent controls in the dash, not by using the rotary blower control switch.

Sorry--it's a 91.

It's less than marginal now with the van standing, even with the blower on high.

Did this problem start suddenly or has it been an issue from day 1?

I recall the fan working pretty well when I first bought the van, when I was checking it out before purchasing it. A little debris did come out of the defroster vents.

PO said he had recently fixed the resistor as the blower wasn't working before.

But I do not recall it really pushing air out the vents after that, so I would say it was rather sudden.

I did read something about loose/free-swinging flaps that might have something to do with air from the fan, though I am not 100% sure on that.

Does the "after that" in the above quote mean right after the PO repaired the resister? If so, it might be possible that the polarity of the motor was reversed and is now running backwards.

No, PO had replaced the resistor before I had seen the van the first time.

I meant "after that first time I turned the fan on."

don't think so as everything works as it should with ram air.

Access to fan is only possible by removing the Dash.

I figured. But the fan itself isn't the problem. I do realize I will have to pull the dash and get into the heater box anyway though.

Could this be those free-swinging flaps I've read about not closing so the fan's air isn't forced to go through the heater core and out the proper vents?

I have read here you are supposed to hear them shut when you turn the fan on, but I don't hear anything.

I was afraid to remove the dash the first time to, after all I'm a banker not a mechanic, but it really wasn't anywhere near as tramatic as I originally thought. Also it gives you a chance to see all that the PO messed with and it's so much easier to clean the grounds without anything in your way. Did I mention that you can clean as well, not sure how so much grime gets to areas that you can't.
Just follow ben's instructions from http://www.benplace.com/dash.htm and you are good to go.
Just as a side note I didn't remove my steering wheel, just dropped it, but I did remove my front seats to give me more room to move around.
And if I ever had to do it again I wouldn't hesitatenot as bad as I had feared.

It doesn't seem to matter where I have the sliders. Ram air flows out the correct vents when driving. When stopped, air only faintly exits the same vents that work at speed.

It is possible the flaps through which ram air enters the box aren't closing well or at all. With a stock system in good condition you can hear the flaps slam shut when you turn the fan on high.

I wonder if you fan motor could be running backwards or something, you wouldn't get much air flow if that were happening.

"How do I get to the fan intake?"

Air intake can be seen and maybe cleaned by removing the upper grill, then removing the black plastic screen at the center. I think this is the main entry point for mice.
