I was at the landfill last week and my 87 westy weighed 1930 kg. Subtract 90 for me and you have 1840 kg or 4056.5 lbs. I did have a bunch of stuff under the seat and my mountain bike but that's all the extras. _________________ 1974 Thing

Syncro panelvan, 4500lbs, filled with way too much stuff I think I will need when going off road. Winch at the front and an extra battery brings weight up.
Needs a diet. |

My everyday weight is 5200 LBS. Stopped at a scale on the way to Telluride last year and we weighed in at 6400 lbs totally loaded. It was almost exactly proportioned between the front and rear wheels which was good. Still too freaken heavy though! _________________ 89 Syncro Westy - GW 2.5, now with a double knob job

The 5200 included me and the gear that normally lives in the van. Probably a half tank of gas. The 6400 was myself, 9 year old son and wife plus 3 weeks worth of gear. _________________ 89 Syncro Westy - GW 2.5, now with a double knob job

Just found this thread. Thought I'd weigh in.....
Last trip -
Full Westy
15" Wheels and bigger brakes
Spare tire in stock location
2 occupants
Aux battery
1/2 tank gas
1/2 tank water
Fridge/cooler full
Stocked for trip (mid trip)
No rocket box or rack so fairly 'stock' in that regard
All wheels on deck - 4950 lbs (2,245 Kilo - Canadian Westy after all)
Front on - 2700 lbs
Back on - 2600 lbs
While the front/back weights are probably combine some weight, I think the front is a bit heavier then the rear, looks a bit front heavy from the street. Need to redistribute some tools or batteries aft perhaps.... _________________ '91 Westfalia, Bordeaux Red Pearl 2.1L 2wd Auto

Flossie (full Westy) weighed in at #4100 with 1/4 tank of gasoline and me in the driver's seat. Not too much stuff in closets, etc. I'm about #175. _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |

A man after my own heart, that's some kinda driving!
Beauty image, where is that?
We weight about 5,500 in our '84 Westy, 3.5 years on road so far, and trying to get down to GVWR of 5,160. Weight is only maybe 200 less in front than rear, and that's just wrong IMHO.
I'd love to get the F>R ratio more rearward as built for, too much weight up front stresses sidewalls when steering and one needs more air balance in front to offset that. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

Beautiful pic!
Am jealous, your van was a mere 65 miles (as the raven flies) from our house in Glacier Bay - and we've still to get ours into the state!
Off topic - do you have a link/thread on your experience with your hatch rack setup? _________________ '91 Westfalia, Bordeaux Red Pearl 2.1L 2wd Auto

Thanks, Dave... awesome.
Been to all 48 many times. Wifey was a stew for years and flying there would have been free, but I refused as we're driving there! (Dammit) _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

On a recent 8,500 mile trip the van weighed about 5,200 lbs (add a passenger the the weight below). This weight included full gas and water tanks, two aux. batteries (100 ah and 50 ah), two bikes on a Fiamma rack, assorted hiking, camping and living gear for two adults, one spare tire in the stock location, a small selection of tools, and a rotating assortment of 12-18 books for my partner.
The van got 17.4 mpg for the trip. Most of the time mileage is closer to 18.5 but stretches of hwy or interstate with the cruise set at ~75 mph drop mileage to about 16 or so.
Weight in OKC
Near Vermillion Cliffs, AZ Hwy 89A
