A Great Day!
I drained and filled the transaxle fluid.
Installed new axle boots.
Put the motor back in.
Stole the battery out of the bug...Had a old crusty positive terminal connection...Fixed it & fired it!
My son was as excited as I was & snapped a pic of himself.
My first ride in the bus. Why I never did this earlier is beyond me...It was a blast! Oh...By the way the engine's not running.
Link
I planned a week ago to take my bus on a Labor Day maiden voyage...Here it is.
Link
Now it was a short wimpy ride because I still don't have brakes other than the EB. The new wheel cylinders were shipped Friday.
If you exclude the cost of the tires I'm into this bus for $300 over the purchase price...Not bad.
Driving a VW bus for the first time in my life with my boy (Yes his in there somewhere...No passenger seat) PRICELESS! _________________ I’ve tried nothing and I'm all out of ideas!

Once you've had a bus, you won't be able to live without one. I've owned splitties since 1981, and have always had at least one in the garage (sometimes more, and even the occasional bay window or Vanagon). Working on it with your kids is also a great thing. |

Even Nancy Reagan can't stop you from being hooked on this drug.

I don't recall seeing a '64 close by.

Well the FedEx truck didn't come today until almost 6pm. My wheel cylinders (The final piece of the puzzle) have been sitting in a FedEx truck in town since Friday...Don't you love that!
The good news is it gave me more time to tinker on the bus.
The dome lights didn't work the other day...I cleaned the connections and presto all 4 bulbs are in perfect working order.
I repainted the bumpers with Krylon Dover White...Apparently it's what some here have found to be the closest match to L82.
I love it...Much better than my super bright Donny Osmond bleached white teeth look (That I wouldn't post pix of).
While the paint was drying I shopped online for front seat upholstery and just can't pull the trigger yet but wanted something to get me to our club's show Oct 3rd. I could have rolled solo with my seat but I want to bring some peeps (Or at least one more than myself).
Take it easy on me...I'm a first timer.
Adding some extra cushion over the hair pad.
I had a grommet kit laying around so I thought that would be a good way to secure the fabric.
A little stitch work to hold the corners in.
Sexy...Black Fashion 11.5oz Denim.
My baby looks good in jeans.
I like the way it turned out...I'll probably go ahead and do the driver's set too. _________________ I’ve tried nothing and I'm all out of ideas!

Thanx...Here it was before I got started...The underside was globbed with oily goo.
I didn't want to paint it & cover everything with rattle can...I want it running sweet and looking natural.

I was just in Tri-cities for the past 5 days...too hot and dusty for me but the fishing is GREAT! Will this be at the Richland show in Oct? I plan on making the trek over.. |
You should have been here when it was pushing 100F eveyrday...Now you know why I didn't hang out in the garage.
I hope to have it at the show...I'll be running the registration booth...Say hi when you get here! |
FWIW, that is a late 66/ through 67 only rear tin (no pre-heat hole) and front tin (pre heat hole on the right). Some pretty hard to find tin there. Noice!
Usually an old bus has some mismatched set from a super beetle.
Does it have the right-hand heater box with the spout for the paper pre-heat tube? _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

As a matter of fact it does. Thanx for explaining it that way. I was trying to tell a local guy that over the phone but didn't do a good job of it because he didn't know what I was talking about. I had already put the motor back in the bus without that hose (Our local shop was out of stock) and was second guessing myself whether or not I remember that heater box tube. My friend said the hose is usually just directed towards the motor or something like that. I said there was a spout...He's like uh? Then I'm like uh? We both just dropped the subject.
Come to think of it we might have been talking about the same thing but just had poor descriptions of the setup. He's a guru and I'm the Village Idiot when it comes to VW's.
I know I would have figured it out once I went to hook up the new hose...Thanx for the reassurance! _________________ I’ve tried nothing and I'm all out of ideas!

The title of this thread fits me too. My wife & I have been to OCTOFEST now three times and I caught the splitty fever bad, so my only hope was to get one! I picked up this 65 Westy S042 yesterday and felt like sleeping out in the garage with her last night! I've always been a Bug guy, never owned a bus before. Everything on the Westy is disassembled so I'm looking at a gigantic jigsaw puzzle. The body on this bus is nearly perfect so I won't be spending tons of money repairing rust. Its been sitting a long time so I hope to rebuild the engine and redo the brakes during the long cold winter here in Ohio and have her on the road by spring. Will be running in primer for a while but we're looking forward to having some fun. Guess I'm gonna have to teach my wife how to drive it now.

Well this week has been a brake focus. I installed 6 new wheel cylinders and shoes. Since I had the rear hubs apart I took the advice of a local club guy and installed new axle seals too. I had a problem removing the driver's rear hub and had to run down to Auto Zone and take advantage of their free tool rental. I picked up a 3 claw (5 ton) puller...Don't tell them what it's for unless you want to grab a bag of popcorn and watch them try to find the application on the computer. "Uhh Your bus didn't come with drums".
The other issue was removing the stuck spacer from the axle. I saw this pic from another bus owner who had a stuck spacer and used the same claw puller from AZ.
My Pop came over to bleed the brakes and afterwords we jumped in the bus and zipped all over the neighborhood. It was a beautiful day and lot's of people were outside enjoying the weather...I was surprised at the looks!
The only issue we found was no brake lights.
I spent today chasing down the problem but I'm glad to report that battle is over and I prevailed. I installed new brake switches but still had no brakes lights. I checked my grounds...Noth'in. I connected the wires directly to each other and still nothing. I checked for voltage at the switch...Bingo power so what's the problem? I looked at wire diagrams posted on vintagebus.com and traced the wires to the Emergency Light Relay...Ahh...Dirty terminal.
So...all this to say I'm officially on the road rollin my '67 Kombi...It is a Kombi right? _________________ I’ve tried nothing and I'm all out of ideas!

I just got a middle seat at a swap meet but it's from a later year. Someone just gave me a full back seat but I'm not sure what it's from? _________________ I’ve tried nothing and I'm all out of ideas!

Super score, I'd say. What radio is it? |
Just a radio update for those who care.
Someone was over the other day and asked if the radio worked. I said I don't know...Wait no it won't because I removed the speaker in the kick panel. My friend left and I thought I would see if the radio lit up or anything of the sort. Click...Talk radio starts broadcasting from the Sapphire V baby! The speaker I removed must have been an add on because the original under the dash works great! _________________ I’ve tried nothing and I'm all out of ideas!
