My '77 (mexican made) euro181 has the steering column mounted lever.
Maybe they changed this when they changed the steering wheel from 2-spoke to 4-spoke? (mid 1973?)

Hello

The answer is in the article "181 Story Part 2" in my website. They changed from the dash mounted switch to the column-mounted switch in March 1973.

Captain Spalding, you can see an "old" instrument panel here :

The dash mounted switch is the part number 8 in the previous picture. A better picture here :

About the european turn signal, Doc 181 is right.
In Europe, our VW Type 181 only had the small ones. The difference in Europe is in the base of the turn signal.
Early Type 181 : small base, small turn signal.
Late Type 181 : bigger base (the same as the VW Things), with small turn signal.

The mexican Type 181 (Safari) has its own history also. For example, early Safaris had the small tail lights (like in Europe). Late Safaris had the big tail lights (like in the USA).

Regards
Pierre-J M.

Thanks Pierre-J. I need to join your site right away!

Just to make it perfectly plain, the turn signal on the front fender has a single bulb, with one filament, and it is only the turn signal. When you pull the light switch out to the first position, the tail lights come on in back, and the "city lights" in the headlights turn on, and nothing comes on in the turn signals on the fenders.

Is that correct?

100% Wink On euro cars, turn signals are turn signals only, they don't serve as parking lights, or city lights. The city lights are included in the headlamp and are white, not orange. The front 181 T/S are single filament 21w, just like the rear T/S bulb.

Part 2: front turn signals.
Is it safe to assume that the turn signal on the left is exclusive to Europe and the one on the right is exclusive to the Americas?

That early turn signal is on a late fender. On the early thing it has a smaller boss.

Whether using small indicator housing or not....ALL.181s had the larger imdicator Base pressing (later wings) on post 1972 cars.
