|
|
I have a 60 single cab.... my brakes blew and i had to take the passenger rear brake drum off to replace the wheel cylinder. Its stuck on the reduction box axle.... i have tried everything to get it off with no luck. but now my axel to the reduction box is totally screwed. I doubt i will be able to find the axle i need but i do have the reduction boxes from a 66 bus. My question is.... Whould i be able to take the long axles and reduction boxs off of the 60 single cab and put the ones from the 66 on instead? from where they connect on the trans to the drum... would this be possible? or do they connect diffently? or are they different all together?

The whole shebang will fit, no problem. The 1966 RGBs will gear it higher, the brakes will be bigger, and the wheel cylinders will cost a lot less. Most of the braking power is at the front so I don't know how it will feel to have the bigger brakes just at the rear. I have 1964-1967 transaxles and later model frontends on all four of my older model buses. _________________ Don't worry; be happy. (Baba) |

The wheel cylinders are identical from '55-'70, so I wouldn't look forward to a savings there. |

the short answer is yes you can take the big nut boxes and put them on your center section.
The longer answer is...
well, do a search and look up reduction rebuild... there is a tutorial that explains it, by hazetguy, with pics.
Also, read through your Bentley on it.
The axle shafts are the same, but I'd pull them off, use the best ones,a nd inspect the crown gears and fulcrum plates and upgrade worn parts as needed.
you will want to remove the tranny to do this, . I am sure you can replace it in situ, but not worth it. Plus you might want to replace old tranny mounts and shift linkage bushings and dust covers.
Another option is do a search on drum puller or stuck drum to figure how to separate the drum from the axle shaft.
In order to pull the rgb box/tube off the tranny, you will need to remove that drum.
Always use grease or anti-seize when putting a drum on the axle.
You may want to clean up and paint you new tube/s boxes, takes them apart and check all the bearings, and there is a plug on the inside that must be remove to replace the inner bearings.
Here is a helpful exploded view from the Parts List:
