I have seen them around at surplus stores. Anyone know if there are diesel cans or are they all red?

Find the thread about folding tire racks. I think the toyota ones can be modified with a jerry can holder as well as the tire, and it looks good. I do believe there are yellow diesel jerry cans available too, possibly also blue ones for water.

I think the Con-Ferr carrier is excellent, but I hate Blitz Gas Cans because the ones I had leaked. The spout is separate, there is no provision to attach it to the can. The cap to the Blitz can requires a tool, such as a screwdriver, to twist tight and re-open. imho, not a positive seal design.

I now use a Wedco NATO style Jerrycan
http://tinyurl.com/4f7jtb
it does not leak, and the spout can be attached to the can. The cap clamps down, and requires no tools to tighten or reopen.

The Con-Ferr carrier will not work with a NATO Jerrycan.

The NATO Jerrycan is imvho, a much superior design to the Blitz.

I did see a Vanagon using Con-Ferr Mounts and Blitz cans, they put two on the rear hatch of the Van... thats 80 pounds on the door, not my first pick.

Bottom line, I would not buy Blitz, I would buy Wedco. Wedco cans can be mounted on a Jerry Lee Ladder on the rear hatch, or on a swing out tire carrier including the ones from a pathfinder that folks are adapting to Vanagon. Pictured in this thread:

Here's something I was working on over the weekend. Thought I'd share since this thread appeared, in case someone is thinking of building their own. I have a modified Bronco II spare tire rack on the rear of my syncro mounted on the passenger side of the van. I moved the tire holding section over to the center of the van so that I can weld this thing I built to the rack next to the tire. I'll post more photos when I get it all together.

This thing is rough looking as hell, but came out better than I thought. Construction is 1/2" solid metal rod bent on a vise with a pipe. I'm most excited by the hinge thing I came up with. I serves to lock the gas can shut to prevent fuel theft, but also secures the can into the holder tightly. I'll drill the tabs you can see in the photo to accept a pad lock.

This holder will also serve my needs in particular since my tire rack resides on the passenger side of the van. So this holder will position the jerry can about 10" from the syncro fuel filler at the rear corner of the van.

Personally I like this one: http://www.kolpinpowersports.com/products/water-and-fuel-packs.html
And they have water packs as well.

These fit nicely in that space above your head - luggage rack. The extra weight up there also helps even out the Westy saggy butt syndrome. Wink

Cheers!
Dave
