Posted: Fri Jun 26, 2009 11:42 pm Post subject: Heater cable assembly order - UPDATED PHOTOS |
|
|
I posted on this a while back and didn't get an answer. Can't locate that thread so thought I would ask again another way. 1977 bus heater cable question
There is a rubber boot at the back where the plastic fits to the tube. Anyone know of a source. Right now am using electricians tape.
There is a white small nylon / plastic piece that slides over the cable inside this area. The pictorials show it on the bellows side of the arrow but when it came apart it was on the tube side with the hat facing away from the tube and the small end stuck into the tube. Which is correct, the pictorial or the way it was?
The front end is exposed to moisture. Is there supposed to be a boot at this end? If yes can someone show me a part number or where to get it? Electricians tape? Silicone sealer to keep moisture out?

no idea on the plastic doo dad, but you need these boots for the front of the bus. they are the ones in the bottom middle of the screen, but when you click on them, it shows a pic of something different but at any rate, you need the ones that look like them. kind of like horn wire boots, but different

edit: this is a better pic of them

the late ones are two pieces but they serve the same function. There is a black plastic piece the fits on the tube and a small nipple with a slot that fits on the cable. The question is whether that nipple fits inside the tube or whether it fits inside the rubber bellows. Tell me, on your white plastic part from the 1969 - is the end with the arrow on the tube side or the cable end side?

The end the arrow is pointing to is on the tube side (pointing to front) on my unmolested 78. The rubber boot goes on the tapered end. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Ok. I took some photos
In the first one is how it came apart however PO has been in there before.
In the second shot, is how Vagcat etc pictorial shows it but the parts don't seem to fit as well and I don't know which way the hat fits on the smallest part.
I haven't a clue which is correct.

see where the rusty groove is on my plastic doo dad? that clipped to the frame. my best guess is, the metal tube that slides into it may be off at install from the factory, thus the multiple grooves. i would say put your clip in the position where it best fits, keeping the metal tube snug in the holder welded to the frame. sorry i can't really help too much _________________

here is the update. I discovered that the arms that hold the black plastic part were not allowing it to go all the way onto the tube so there was a gap. That allowed the cable barbs to get trapped. I did some fitting and was able to get the cables to move smoothly. Used the beetle rubber parts on the front of the tube under the driver to seal that area so both the front and back are sealed. Used electricians tape to take the place of the rubber boot on the back between the plastic and tube since that part is likely never to be found new or repro. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Sorry, I don't have any pictures of the cable.
But regarding the DEAD pictures It would be great if people would do what Everett asks-

When posting photos, PLEASE consider posting the photos in the Samba Gallery instead of just posting links to some picture hosting site.
If you post it elsewhere, the photos often become "dead links" after a certain period of time, which ruins the thread where you posted the photos. If you post them in the Samba Gallery they are here forever. Not only that, but in the Gallery users can search for photos so much easier than they can in the forums. It's worth it. |

^X2^ Dead links suck.
Greg, tell us more about which rear cable and what else you need to see, there's more than one on some models and in different spots. Maybe even some pics of what you have now (in the Samba gallery of course ). _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Perhaps send SGK a PM and see if he can repair his pics, you are missing the plastic clip that snaps into the holder on the body as well as the boot and small nylon sleeve that pushes into the end. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Server is permanently off. I can't edit old posts and Everett hasn't gotten back to me yet whether he can take the photos from me on a DVD in the same file structure and write a scrip that will change Kentcomputer.com to whatever structure he puts the photos in. sorry. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Dang, is there a source for these pieces other than a donor?
