If you use the anchor kit and use self tapping sheet metal screws at all of the joints...those hold up rather well. They were never ment to be permanent structures...but I have one thats been up for 3 years...still looks good to.

When I get out of the military that is my plan. Looks like it holds up pretty well. Maybe even cement the poles into the ground. _________________ Josh

It begs to be pointed out........ you have a garage!!! Why set up a tent?? Just wait till the big winds blow and that tent vanishes and all of the steel posts end up all over your antique VW's.
Yep, had it happen, not with VW's in it though.
Good luck none the less.

I have no access to the garage thats why I mounted that thing. That puppy is well anchored to the ground, trust if that thing ever blowws off, you guys will be the first ones to know. |

Heres what remains of the last one I had that was " staked down". Watch out.

I had one of those(key word is had) for a couple years.
A big windstorm came through and lifted it off the ground close to 30 feet in the air then deposited it right on top of my wifes brand new Malibu.
My convertible bug was in the tent at the time. It got a nice gouge up the passenger door and ripped my top. It dented in my wifes car's roof, hood, trunk and drivers rear quarter plus gouged paint in multiple spots.
The tent was staked down with 12 stakes that screwed into the ground 20". The wind pulled them out like butter.
I really liked the tent and still miss it but I will NEVER put one up again. It was a very expensive lesson. _________________ OGJHC

I'm starting to get little wafts of bus stink coming from the north. Something about the unique scent of drivers seat padding when it's glued together with mouse piss and shit that really gets me going... and I'm smelling it! Oh yeah! Time to start loading up the equipment. |

I'm not too worried about this thing going anywhere, (I mean if goes it goes, there's nothing I can do about that) I've had it up for two months now and since then, we've had a couple of pretty descent storms, and so far so good, we're in a part of the country where we dont get the weather that one would get say in Florida of the mid west. |

actually in this other picture you can see that if I park the bug all the way in and the bus not so far in, I have plenty of space in the front to jump out the passanger door of the bus

As I pointed out earlier and others are confirming, history has proven that these tents (and virtually all other types as well) blow away, staked down or not. It matters not if you wish to accept this fact. Best of luck to you and hope your damage is minimal.
This isn't unlike those motoring souls who still don't wear seat belts as they are told to do over and over again because THEY won't get into an accident and then changing their minds quickly after/during the accident that finally happens!
I had a much higher quality tent (about $2000 commercial quality) destroyed by a wind in the fall. IT was lashed to the deck railing that it was erected upon. One of the lashings failed and the whole tent and frame just imploded onto the deck and pretty much messed up everything it was "protecting". I live in North Western Jersey which is NOT known for its high winds. Our odds are also higher for we have 8 - 10 tents in use on any given week.

I've often thought about putting one of those up
in my back yard. That is, until I learned they were
outlawed a few years back and the wonderful personnel
at Code Enforcement are constantly on the watch.
They will make you take them down.
That's life down here in Hurricane Central. _________________ ****************************

I'm sorry guys, but while I understand the concern of some of you (who have had a bad experience wtih these tents) I really dont see a wide spread epidemic of cover ups being lifted off in the air and slaming into cars, I did take the pros and the cons into consideration before obtaining this carport, and I have to say, that the carport flying in the air was one that concerned me plenty, but I turned a blind eye to it to get my working condittions a little more managebale, and I have to say so far I am very pleased, I can now take on long term projects and take my time, and not have to worry about cleaning a mess every time I have to stop working, not to mention the cars will have a dry place to stay in the winter and I will have a place to work in the cold months, (not that the bad weather ever stoped me from wrenching outside) but it should be easier.
I apreciate your input into this matter, but if something is bound to happen, it will happen, I'm not gonna worry about now. i promise that if anything ever happens this will be the first place I post about it, and you guys can take all the shots you wanna take at me, and I will just take my medicine. |
