I noticed oil leaking out of the head through the studs. I looked under the car while doing the valves and while looking up at the push rod tubes I saw oil which had been leaking out through the studs.
Are there seals behind the head nuts to keep that from happening?

No seals on the head studs, is the engine vented with a breather of sorts?maybe over filled with oil?Maybe retorque the heads will cure it,Madmike

You are supposed to apply sealant around where the stud comes thru the head. When you put the washer and nut on the stud the sealant gets smushed into the hole sealing the head so oil won't escape.

No, you really want to loosen them all up and re-torque in the correct sequence.

I'd do it. It's worth a shot. Worst case scenario is you have to do what you might have to do anyway, right?

The lower nuts can loosen much easier than the top due to them always being bathed in oil. Do one at a time, remove, reseal, retorque to proper spec.

Honestly, no harm, no foul. Try it. You won't hurt anything trying.

As Eric said, it is okay to do. I had to do this to my last engine. One at a time, and clean everything perfectly.

Wait, you're supposed to seal them at the bottom or it's a good trick to keep the studs dry? I've never heard of doing that, but it is a good idea.

I put motoseal under the washer, then put motoseal under the nut. I don't do anything on the threads.

I use the teflon thread sealent on washer stud&nut.also the lower studs take more "punnishment" 1 due to them being longer and 2, because the valve spring pressure& the pushrods pushing out on that side of the head.I would (and have done before) retorque the head studs on the lowers. I pulled &checked them all and only the lowers moved, then backes off & retorqued them all, and the uppers all stoped about where they were, and the lowers went to thier new location where they were after I tried just doing them with out loosening.
another thought on this, Ive never seen a head leek any where but the lower portion.those springs are pretty strong . and dont forget some(most) heads have the rocker stud going through the head, it may be leeking there too.(and that does take a seal)
